Ten Intentional Things
Live with intention.
Walk to the edge.
Listen hard.
Practice wellness.
Play with abandon.
Laugh.
Choose with no regret.
Continue to learn.
Appreciate your friends.
Do what you love.
Live as if this is all there is.
More than two decades ago, Mary Anne Radmacher wrote these words which have since appeared on posters, coffee mugs, bags, journals and refrigerator magnets. I came across them again recently (she has a new book out titled Live With Intention), and was struck by the fact that these words summarize how I want to live my life. These are the core elements of what I consider to be my ideal life, and if I were able to experience them on a regular basis, I would be truly happy (even though I consider myself a pretty happy person now). And yet 'playing with abandon' or 'practicing wellness' seem to often slip down on my priority list as I go about my day. As I get caught up in all the things that need done each day, I somehow forget the actions and attitudes that are most important to me. Creating my own version of ten intentional things and paying attention to one or more of them as I go about my day has helped me (as Mary Anne says) rediscover what I deeply know.

What Do Your Ten Things Look Like? Give some thought to your own intentions and what they might look like on an average day.
A few from my list are: - prepare and eat healthy food throughout the day - take time in the morning to journal or meditate - find something to laugh at everyday (even if it's something I've done) - call a friend or family member for no special reason - learn something new that will help me be a better coach, teacher or friend
Create your own list and then willfully include one or more of them in the course of your day. You might need to create systems or rituals to make sure you do the activities that energize you. One of my clients, for example, created a space in her bedroom that was 'her own' where she could read, journal or meditate without being interrupted.
As Mary Anne says in her book, "The intentions you hold define your day and your life. What are your intentions and how do they look in your daily life?"
