Positive Energy Tip

LogoColorNoTextFind The Bright Spots

If you are like most people, you have a tendency to focus on the negative. Let's say you child comes home with his report card and he got one A, four B's and one F. Where will you spend your time as a parent? Nearly all parents fixate on the F! Or what if, in your yearly performance review, your boss mentions five areas of your job that you do exceptionally well and one or two areas that could use some improvement. Would you spend more of your time and energy thinking about the areas in which you excel or the ones that your boss says need work? Most of us have a "negativity bias" in the brain, making the bad stronger than the good. It's like Velcro for negative experiences, but Teflon for positive ones! This tendency toward negativity keeps us feeling like something is broken and needs to be fixed; not a good recipe for happiness or success!

If we want to tackle change (and feel good in the process), we must "train the brain" to find the bright spots! Look for what's working in your life and learn to build on that. If you want your child to do well in school, look at the subjects that he already excels in and discover what he does in that class that gets him the A! Trying to lose weight? Rather than focus on the things you did to undermine yourself (didn't go to the gym on Tuesday, ate 2 pieces of birthday cake last weekend), think about all the steps you have taken in the direction of your goal. Focus on the days that you did go to the gym or that you've been eating more fruits and vegetables. How have you been able to make those changes and how does it make you feel when you do them?

Just like you suddenly start noticing the same make of car everywhere after you buy one, when you decide to look for the positive, that's what you'll see. And focusing on the positive experiences in your life will shift the balance of power in your mind and tilt the Velcro/Teflon ratio in your brain toward happiness!

The following two exercises can help you discover your bright spots, leading to greater balance and a more positive orientation:

1. Think about a particular time period (your morning, yesterday or the past week). What went well for you? What positive thoughts did you have? What did you see, taste, feel, hear or do that was pleasurable? What "wins" did you experience or what breakthroughs did you have in your understanding about something? What activities have you excelled at and what strengths were you using?

Then as you go about your day, have the intention to notice everything good that happens to you. Once you notice something positive, take a moment to savor it consciously. Take the good experience in deeply and feel it; make it more than just a mental observation.

2. Think about a particular problem or something that is not going well in your life. Then imagine that you go to bed, and while you are sleeping a miracle happens and the problem is resolved. When you wake up in the morning, what's the first small sign you'd see that would make you think, "Well, something must have happened - the problem is gone?" Once you've identified the specific sign that you would notice if your problem was solved ask yourself, "When was the last time I actually saw or felt a little bit of that miracle in my real life, even if for just a short time?" That's your bright spot! For example if you are having a hard time getting to the gym, your miracle might be that you get up, put on your workout clothes and bike to the gym before checking your email. By recognizing and analyzing what would be different if the problem was solved, you will be able to figure out what to do differently to solve your current problem.
