Quote of the Week
"The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one."

Spring Into Action
Spring is the time of year that we typically get energized to tackle those projects that we have wanted to do all winter such as reorganize closets, start walking, plant a garden or clean the garage.
But even with good intentions, we often get stuck and don't do what it takes to move forward in accomplishing our goal. We dread getting started because the task feels overwhelming. We start to picture all that we will have to conquer to complete the job and talk ourselves out of doing it before we start - "I'll need to go through all my clothes to see what fits, what needs repaired or what I want to give away. Then I'll have to spend hours putting things back neatly and I probably won't have enough room for everything anyway." Or, "I can't even walk to the end of the block without getting out of breath. How will I ever be able to walk for the thirty minutes that is typically recommended?" The amount of time it will take and all the work that needs done feels like too much.
The way to free ourselves from this dread is to scale down the mission. Rather than feeling like you have to get it all done in one sitting, set aside a predetermined amount of time and only work for that time. Set a kitchen timer for 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes or put together a playlist of favorite songs on your iPod to listen to while you work. When the timer goes off or your playlist is finished you can stop with a clear conscience. That doesn't sound so bad, does it?
What good is a 5 or 10 minute session when your project looks so big? Not much! It gets you moving though, and that's the hardest part. Starting an unpleasant task is always worse than continuing it. So once you start your project, chances are you won't stop when the time is up. You'll be surprised out how fast things turn around and you'll take pride in your accomplishment. That pride and confidence will build on itself and before you know it the job is done!

Get Started
Pick a project that you'd like to get done now that spring is here and pick a time to start (right now, one evening this week, Saturday morning). You can set aside as much or little time as you like. Even 5 minutes is a start and it's important that it doesn't feel overwhelming.
When you are ready to get started, set the timer for
5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes or listen to the playlist you've put on your iPod. Then get moving, knowing that you simply have to work for the amount of time that you've set. It isn't necessary to complete the project! When the timer goes off or your
playlist is finished you can stop with a clear conscience. Or do just a little more if you feel like it.
Congratulate yourself for the work you've done and decide when you'd like to take the next mini-step toward accomplishing your goal!
