Valentine's Day - Not Just For Lovers
Happy Valentine's Day! According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion Valentine's cards are sent each year. (And approximately 85 percent of those are purchased by women!)
Valentine's Day is traditionally for couples, but it's also a wonderful opportunity to let other special people know that you appreciate and care about them. Who would make your list of people who have enriched your life? Maybe it's a a friend, a mentor, a teacher, a co-worker or a special relative.
And while most people celebrate Valentine's Day by sending a greeting or buying chocolate or flowers, there are other ways to let someone know you care.
Why not offer to babysit so that a friend can have a special date night with her husband? If you are really adventurous you can offer to have the kids sleep over so that mom and dad can sleep in after their night out.
Or shovel snow for an elderly neighbor so that they can feel safe walking outside.
You could bring in coffee for an employee or co-worker that has been especially helpful to you. Or cook a special dinner and take it to your favorite aunt.
Other non-traditional ways to celebrate Valentine's Day might include volunteering at your local animal shelter or other organization that need volunteers. Or sign up to be an organ donor or give blood.
Opening your heart and doing something for someone else is a great way to feel energized!

Celebrate a Non-Traditional Valentine's Day
If you've already bought roses or a chocolate heart for your special Valentine, that's great. I am sure they will enjoy and appreciate it. But this Valentine's Day, also commit to doing something special for someone you know (or someone you don't know that could use some help and support).
The ideas above will get you started, but with a little thought and creativity you can come up with things that don't have to cost a lot of money and yet gives you an opportunity to change lives, including your own.
Happy Valentine's Day!
