Give Yourself an Energy Jolt
Coming across this week's quote was a real eye-opener for me. I realized that, although watching television, playing computer games, checking email and my friends' status on facebook may be pleasant, they are really mind-numbing activities that make me lose track of time, drain my energy, aren't satisfying and don't get me closer to achieving my goals.
So this week I did an experiment. I made a list of things that improve my mood, boost my energy and even bring a smile to my face. I called these my "energy jolts" and included activities on my list such as journal, meditate, stretch (sitting, standing or lying down), exercise, watch a good movie, sit outside, read, go for a walk, laugh, close my eyes and take 5 deep breaths, play with Molly (my dog), eat something healthy, Skype with my granddaughter. Then when I felt tired, anxious, bored or just had a few minutes to spare, I chose one of my energy jolts (depending on how much time I had and what appealed to me) and did that activity instead of something that was not really satisfying.
What a difference that made in how I felt physically and emotionally! I had more energy, felt more positive and started looking forward to my next break. I even had a greater sense of accomplishment at the end of the day because many of my "jolts" were things that I really want to do, but never seem to get around to doing.
How much time and energy do you spend "...for that which does not satisfy?"
What activities cause you to lose track of time, make you feel drained and get in the way of achieving your goals?
And since "energy jolts" are unique to every individual, what activities improve your mood, boost your energy and bring a smile to your face?

Establish Your Own Energy Jolts
Think about your typical day and be honest about how much time and energy you spend on activities that aren't satisfying, and may even be draining. Then make a list of activities that renew your energy and make you feel good. Be sure to include things that don't take a lot of time (it only takes a minute to close your eyes and take 5 deep breaths) and can be done anywhere.
Keep your "energy jolt" list handy and when you feel tired, drained, overwhelmed or have some free time, do one of the activities on the list instead of a mindless activity that you typically do. Do this for a few days and watch your energy soar!
