I did not send out a newsletter last week because my dad died unexpectedly. Although it was a sad time for our family, the days following his death were a celebration of his life. I took some time this week to reflect on how I would want to be remembered when I die, and created my own life portrait. It was such a powerful experience that I decided to share it to help you Energize For Success!

Your Life Portrait
On the one 9/11 flight that did not crash
into a building, United flight 93, passenger Tom Burnett called his wife. He
knew that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center and surmised that
the hijackers on his plane would likely do a similar thing. Tom said, "I know
we're going to die," which is something we could all say about ourselves. Then he said,
"Some of us are going to do something about it."
We should take the same spirit
of Tom Burnett from this tragedy and resolve that, in light of our impending
death, which could be minutes or years away, we are going to do something
positive with our life, forging the legacy we want and building the kind of
life we want in our one time to live on earth.
Although it may seem like a daunting task to clearly define what it is
you'd like your life to represent,
it helps to "begin with the end in mind."
How would you like to be remembered? What would you want your legacy to be? Would you be happy with what others would say about you after you are gone?
Reflecting on these questions gives us the opportunity to create the type of life we'd like to be remembered for, set goals that support our life values and create a portrait of our life that we can be proud of!

Create Your Life Portrait
Although this exercise has been called "writing your own obituary," I prefer to call it "creating your life portrait."
Take a few minutes to write a paragraph or two about how you would like to be remembered. If you were looking back at your life, what would you like it to look like? How would you like your own "Portrait of Life" to read?
If you are unsure what to write, consider the following questions to help get started:
What life accomplishments am I most
proud of? Am I living my life with enthusiasm? Have I been kind to others? Would others say that I am happy and joyful? How have I made a difference? How do others see me? What do I want my life to represent? How do I want to be remembered? What legacy do I want to leave?
Create a portrait of your life that makes you want to celebrate. Then determine what changes you need to make and take action to create the kind of life you want.
