This newsletter is going out a day late because I was attending the Harvard CME course, "Coaching
in Medicine and Leadership," held in Boston this week. It was wonderful to learn what's new in coaching research and experience the energy of people passionate
about the work they do.

Isn't It Fascinating?
One of the highlights of the Boston conference was attending a lecture by
Ben and Roz Zanders who co-authored The Art of Possibility. It's a
great book. I highly recommend reading it (and I hear the audio version is
superb). Ben is the conductor of The Boston Philharmonic and his passion and energy permeate the room when he lectures.
In his presentation, Ben shared his outlook on how to handle negativity in life. When we experience a disappointment or setback (as we invariably will do), his advice is to throw your arms
up in the air like a referee signaling a touchdown and shout "Isn't it
fascinating?"
If we brood about something that has already happened or worry
about something that might (or might not) happen in the future, we start a downward spiral of negativity that is hard to reverse and gets in the
way of taking action. It's a real energy drain and can keep us stuck for a long time if we let it.
However, by throwing our arms in the air and shouting "Isn't it fascinating?" we stop the downward spiral. It's impossible to have a negative thought and a positive thought at the same time - try it if you don't believe me.
Once we reverse the trend and get the positive energy flowing, we can start an upward spiral that will allow us to figure out the best action to take to get back on track.

Throw Up Your Arms and Shout
This week when you are faced with a disappointment or setback, don't brood or worry. Instead, throw your arms over your head and shout "Isn't it fascinating?" Then ask yourself what you have learned from the situation and what action you can take that will start you back on that upward spiral of positivity and high energy.
