Establish Your Purpose
How many times have you set a goal (or New Year's Resolution) that seemed important to you, but you failed to follow through? If you're like me, too many times to count!
Oftentimes we don't achieve our goals because, even though we want the result, we aren't truly committed to doing the work to make it happen. Change is hard! To make it worth the effort it takes to succeed, we need a strong, meaningful reason to change - a purpose.
To illustrate with a personal example - I have had a goal of writing a newsletter for quite some time. I really wanted to have a published newsletter (the result), but I kept putting off creating the design and writing the content (the work).
But when I began thinking about the purpose for writing my newsletter I realized that, although it would be nice to get clients and fill my coaching groups, my main purpose is to inspire others to be extra-ordinary! And since helping others create their ideal life is deeply important to me, it has become the motivation to do the work to make it happen.
Now I can't wait to get my "regular work" done so I can spend time crafting a newsletter that just might inspire someone to do something or be someone great!

What do you want? And more importantly, why do you want it?
Think about a goal that is important to you. Do you want to lose weight, start a business, get organized, have better relationships, or something else?
Take out your journal or your computer and fill in the blanks in the following statement:
I want _________________________________________, so that _________________________________________.
Take some time to figure out your true motivator. It may not be the first thought that comes to mind. Keep asking yourself what will be different when you achieve your goal. Make sure it is something that is important to you. Once you discover a "so that" that inspires you, taking action will be much easier.
