Words And Their Stories Word of the Month

Word of the Month: Ethereal

The word ethereal has an interesting background. In ancient times, the earth was presumed to move through an invisible medium in space that the Greeks called aether or ether. They believed the ether supported the heavenly bodies, much like water supports a ship. Eventually, ether referred to the heavens in general as a place where the gods moved smoothly among the planets, high above the earth and the problems of human life.

Today's definition: Ethereal means "celestial; heavenly; characterized by unusual delicacy and refinement."
