Words And Their Stories™ Word of the Month
|
Word of the Month: Beneficial
The English language adopted beneficial directly from French, changing its pronunciation only slightly. The French beneficial comes from the Latin bene, which means "well," and facere, "to do; to make." Both bene and facere are worth remembering because they appear in so many different combinations in English. As you might guess from the first part of beneficial, this word always carries a positive meaning.
Now you know that beneficial means "helpful, useful, promoting a favorable result."
