January 2011
FableFriends,

Lamp GirlDr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday is approaching: January 15th. My twin brother Paul and I were only two when Dr. King gave his amazing "I Have a Dream" speech. When we were in elementary school, we learned who he was and how important his mission was. And then, when we were in second grade, he was assassinated. It made a huge impression on me as a child that a hero could be taken like that. It did not make sense. I've spent decades trying to make sense of it. What does make sense is this: that his ideas, his vision, and his dreams live on. However, they live on only if we carry the torch forward.

Join us in encouraging students to carry that torch. Let's inspire them to follow Dr. King's example - not only by becoming skilled in communication, creativity, problem solving, and cultural understanding, but also by embracing their personal missions, hopes, and dreams for a better future.

Thank you for all you do to pass the torch - and keep the Dream alive.

Peter

(and Paul & your FableVision Learning friends)

Dr. Tom O'Brien Remembered
Dr. Tom O'BrienIn December, the education world lost a truly outside-the-box thinker: Dr. Tom O'Brien, well-known math educator and creator of Off the Path Math With Tobbs™. We had the pleasure of calling Tom a friend and collaborating with him to promote meaningful math explorations with young students.

FableVision Learning sends our condolences to Tom's wife, Gail Marshall, and family. Learn more about Tom and his positive impact on education here

Peter H. Reynolds' Glorious, Wonderful, Empty Poster
My Dream Poster Peter H. Reynolds writes, "I love the sweet, expectant nothingness of an empty page. It is a symbol of what each of us is capable of creating, contributing, and sharing." This month, Peter invites you to step into the wonderful emptiness of this new downloadable poster and fill it with your dream. Encourage your students to do the same!
Until next time, keep the creativity flowing and your batteries charged! Together we can make a difference!

Words And Their Stories: Word of the Month
Rejuvenate
The word rejuvenate comes from the Latin prefix re ("again") and the root juvenis, meaning "young." The Latin verb rejuvenescere logically means "to make young again," and this is not far from the modern definition of rejuvenate.

Now you know that rejuvenate means "to make young again; to restore to youthful vigor or condition; to breathe new life into."

Help your grades 5-12 students learn the stories behind words. Check out a FREE trial of Words And Their Stories (formerly Get A Clue), our award-winning web-based vocabulary program.
