Words And Their Stories™: Word of the Month |
Illuminate is formed by the Latin prefix in ("in; into") and the root luminare, which means "to light up." At first, illuminate seems like a relatively easy word to define because we use it in the literal sense, much as the Romans did. However, we now also use it figuratively, so that the light does not actually have to appear. Today, "light" is often related to understanding or recognition. See if you can make this connection.
Now you know that illuminate means "to make bright; to provide understanding."
Help your grades 5-12 students learn the stories behind words. Check out a FREE trial of Words And Their Stories (formerly Get A Clue), our award-winning web-based vocabulary program.
