GET A CLUE® Spotlight Word of the Month

Grotesque

Grotesque comes from the Italian phrase pittura grottesca, meaning "cave paintings." In ancient Rome, a grotto was a chamber where one might find fantastic and strange images of humans and animals painted on the walls. Originally, the word grotesque was the name of such paintings, but now it refers to anything that appears strange or distorted.
