| The Belgrove Condominium Green Planting Day
June 6, 2009
Manna teamed up with NeighborWorks America and more than 100 volunteers for The Belgrove Planting Day, Manna's part of the National NeighborWorks Week event series. The day consisted of a great number of activities to beautify/clean up the Belgrove Condominium located in the Southeast area of Washington DC. Volunteers planted over 400 trees, plants and shrubs based on a design created by "green" landscape architects Lisa Wilcox Deyo and Nancy Everett, who provided their expertise pro-bono. The designs were created to utilize plants and trees native to the area and to conserve water, including the creation of a bio-swale rain garden that will minimize rain run-off. Representatives from the National Credit Union Administration, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Office of Thrift Supervision, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation pitched in together to create a beautiful rain garden for the residents of the Belgrove Condominium. By the end of the day with the tireless work the staff and volunteers, all the plants had been placed and the grounds had been landscaped. The volunteers regained their energy at lunch with celebratory words from Ken Wade, CEO of NeighborWorks America, Rev. Jim Dickerson, Founder of Manna, Inc., and George Rothman, President of Manna, Inc.

Restrictions on Affordable Homeownership are brought to light by Manna's Housing Advocacy Team(HAT)
Shiv Newaldass
On June 29, 2009, Manna's Housing Advocacy Team (HAT) convened to discuss long-term restrictions on affordable homeownership. The purpose of the meeting was to explore the onerous effects of these restrictions on everyday people. Sharon Pinnock, an owner of a condominium unit at the Kenyon Square complex in Columbia Heights, gave a first-hand account of what these restrictions have done to her life. Though she is optimistic about the future, living under these limitations has forced her to make difficult decisions. Retirement is no longer in her immediate future because the equity in her home does not belong to her. She will only be entitled to a scaled percentage of the unit's equity over an extended period of time. Also, upgrading her unit to match her neighbors is unrealistic because any dollar she puts into the unit will not be recouped upon resale. Sharon shared her experiences so that others would learn and be mindful of these restrictions. Her hope is that one day public officials will see what these policies are doing to individuals like her and that they will change them to be more realistic to the needs of people.
