Dear community,
This is a difficult letter to be writing, as I have some challenging news to share with you. I value transparency and I want to include you in what is happening even before we know how we are going to respond to it.
This past week, it has become clear that BayNVC's operations are not sustainable. We have been limping along with a combination of fee-for-service income and donations, but only a small portion of our fee-for-service work has generated sufficient income to cover its own costs or more. We have made this situation work for years, but as the economy continues to stall, registrations continue to drop, and our classes don't fill up sufficiently to be sustainable for BayNVC and the trainers.
At the same time that the level of crisis at BayNVC has become clear, I have also come to recognize the serious health effects of the way I have been working for years, in large part to sustain BayNVC through my work. It is now clear to all of us that I need to make a change and can no longer be relied on to hold responsibility for BayNVC operations beyond sustaining my own work. I now plan to focus my energy on what most sustains my vision for the world and am actually excited to see where that leads me.
The result of all these changes is that we are no longer able to continue operating as we have despite the heroic efforts over the last two years by Dorrit, Carol, and the other staff to streamline systems, improve the website and newsletter, and increase the efficiency of our operations. The current reality is that Dorrit and Carol have decided to lay themselves off as of June 1st, and we are letting go of our administrative office.
Our yearlong programs and my work will continue because they generate enough income to sustain themselves. Our currently scheduled weekly classes will continue for now, as we figure out our next steps. Our hope is to find ways to restructure how trainers work with BayNVC in a way that will allow our public offerings to continue. We also hope that this change will unleash creative energies that will shift how we work and will allow us to offer the gift of NVC to the world in different and more sustainable ways.
This is definitely a hard time, with many people and needs to hold, and we are committed to finding ways of moving through this with care toward those of us who have been relying on BayNVC for our sustainability as well as those for whom BayNVC is a source of learning, inspiration, and community.
I imagine that this may come as a shock to many of you. I hope you will rely on what you have learned with us: connecting with your needs and reaching out to give and receive empathy. We are clear that BayNVC in its current incarnation is a strategy designed to meet needs.
It is our biggest hope that as we re-envision BayNVC we will end up with a strategy that meets more needs. We are planning to be in touch again in the next few days to provide more information about how we are moving forward and to let you know how you can support our forward movement in this time.
With gratitude for all your support over the years, Miki Kashtan, co-founder |
