When students are asked to be active contributors to classroom life, they are much more likely to be eager participants in it. Creating a mutually-agreed upon vision is at the core of Nonviolent Communication.
With your students, establish a vision for the kind of school year you want to have together. Write about it. Draw pictures of it. Talk about it.
Next, make a group agreement about the kinds of behavior that will support this vision. Have students sign the agreement and post it in a place where everyone can see it.
