General Philanthropy

An interactive study by the Chronicle on Philanthropy allows you to explore philanthropy and giving trends in your state, city, or neighborhood.

For decades, United Ways have been slowly transforming and reorienting themselves away from their traditional role as community fundraisers toward a new role as catalysts for community change. This journey has not taken place in isolation. United Way's current focus on community impact has taken place alongside parallel developments in the field of community revitalization and advances in collaboration and collective impact.

This paper explores how the concept of community impact has evolved for United Ways and what it may become in the future. It ends with an overview of the work of one leading United Way, the United Way of Central Iowa in Des Moines, which provides a concrete example of the community impact model in action, both for other local United Ways and for other organizations wishing to work with those United Ways.

A new report from The Center for Effective Philanthropy suggests that while the majority of foundations use social media tools in their work, very few grantees utilize such communications or find those resources less helpful than other communication resources for learning about the foundation.
This webinar is for foundations concerned with their legacy and impact beyond grantmaking to hear about the Green Plus approach to tackling sustainability. Green Plus was specifically designed for smaller enterprises and can help foundations and their grantees become more sustainable while saving time and money.
We'll hear from Green Plus Executive Director, Chris Carmody, to learn the process, benefits, and perks of their certification program. Meisha McDaniel of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and Kevin Trapani of the Redwoods Group Foundation will also share their experiences as foundations that have gone through the certification process.

Funders for LGBTQ Issues has published a report on grantmaking at the intersection of race and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) issues: Towards a More Responsive Philanthropy: Grantmaking for Racial Equity and LGBTQ Justice.

Collaboration
Accomplishing More by Working Together
The summer issue of the Minnesota Council on Foundations Giving Forum focuses on collaboration and collective impact. When and how should we use these methods of working together to jointly attack our toughest social problems? And when do they simply require more effort and resources than the desired results merit? While conflicting opinions abound, consensus is growing about the benefits of collaboration. To create fundamental systems change, alliances are powerful. With time and effort, they can really move the needle on entrenched, complex challenges.

Evaluation

WEBINAR: Embedding Evaluation Thinking & Practices into Your Strategy and Programs

Grantmakers everywhere are redefining the role of evaluation in their work. Evaluation is not only about tracking results and impact, but also learning from experiences in order to adjust and correct organizational  processes. How can you use evaluation to advance learning in your organization? And how can data and information be used to spur board and staff discussions that will lead to attaining better results?
