Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Launches "Piper Trust Encore Prize" that provides the opportunity for an organization to receive up to $55,000 for engaging older adults in social purpose. This prize will recognize and build on the achievements of nonprofit and public sector organizations that engage the talent of people over 50 in "Encore" roles. Learn more.

Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust announce their first-round 2012 grantees in two main focus areas of funding - human services and animals and nature. 22 organizations will receive almost $1.9 million. Also read up on last year's efforts in their just released 2011 Annual Report.

2012 Arizona Homelessness and Hunger Funders Collaborative Since 2009, over one million dollars has been committed, collected, and distributed each year through the Funders Collaborative. In 2012, a total of 12 Funder collaborative partners again joined forces to raise just over $1,027,500, bringing the total raised for this cause to nearly $5 million over 4 years.

Contributed funds were awarded to 15 direct-service agencies and will be used to provide food resources to address hunger, or to increase access to emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

Because the economy has not fully recovered, the participating funders anticipate the potential need to form a collaborative next year. If your organization is interested in contributing to the pooled fund, please contact Ed Portnoy at Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.

2012 Summer Youth Collaborative is a collaborative grantmaking effort to enhance and expand summer programs for children and youth. During out of school time, young people tend to disengage from learning and some may engage in the highest levels of health-harming behaviors. The SYPF recognizes that targeted summer programs provide a continuum of care during the summer months and offer opportunities for youth to develop and sustain enriching and healthy lifestyles.

Since its beginning, SYPF has distributed over $3 million in support of summer programs. In 2011, 13 funders provided support to 47 nonprofit organizations reaching over 45,000 youth.

Member Spotlight

Nancy Baldwin
Trustee and Executive Director
Hickey Family Foundation

Name: Nancy Baldwin
Age: 56
Birthplace: I was born in Batavia, NY and lived in LeRoy, NY (the birthplace of JELLO) until moving to Arizona in 1973. I've lived in the East Valley since then - except early in my marriage when I was living in San Marcos, Texas from 1975-1979.
Family: I'm now happily divorced -- yet consider my "ex" a good friend! I have two Maine Coon (mix) cats, Kirby and Bella. I'm also blessed by having a large and loving circle of friends that keeps growing!

First or most interesting job:
Most interesting (and challenging): During the 13 years prior to his death, I was the (full time) Personal Assistant to Frank Hickey, later the founder of HFF, who was a corporate CEO and extremely successful businessman. I worked for Frank for a total of 26 years in some supportive capacity while he was alive - and many have heard me say that he's really happy that I'm STILL working for him 6 years after his death! No day was the same, and I was exposed to all kinds of activities, ideas, and exciting opportunities. He mentored me in business and management and through his guidance, offered me exposure to things that would change my life. I was lucky to have been in the "right place at the right time" and to have earned his trust over the years of our association.

Hobbies/Favorite pastime:
Music; gardening; reading; and volunteering with a local animal rescue, Arizona Maine Coon Cat Rescue - we take in and foster stray or surrendered cats of the Maine Coon (mix) breed.

Call me and I'll hook you up with a wonderful, loving kitty who needs a fur-ever home!

Path to Philanthropy:
I hold a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and in 2011 received professional certification in Nonprofit Management from the ASU Lodestar Center, Nonprofit Management Institute.

I was intimately involved with Frank Hickey's entire estate planning process beginning in 1994. He exposed me to his revelation that philanthropy could provide the greatest reward and "kick" beyond anything he had ever experienced in his professional life. As a result of his involvement as a long time board member of an international medical rescue and response NGO, he decided to dedicate whatever was left of his time on earth to philanthropy.  He decided that the best way he could do that was to establish the Hickey Family Foundation, focused on the three issues that were of significant meaning to him: Rescue of Youth; Medical Technology Development; and Medical Training Clinics. I was named as a Trustee and the rest, as they say, is history! I never imagined that I'd be doing this, but now can't imagine NOT doing it!

Public Policy

Critical Arizona Ballot Initiative
Arizona is facing a steep budget cliff when the temporary 1% sales tax expires in 2013. This could mean increased cuts in education, healthcare and other social service programs already devastated by previous budget cuts. Efforts are underway to create a ballot initiative that will renew the 1% sales tax. Known as the Quality Education and Jobs Act, the initiative will strengthen Arizona's economy by equipping children to succeed in the classroom, ensuring an educated workforce and creating jobs. This act will provide dedicated funding linked to performance and accountability for students of all ages and prevent legislators from cutting K-12 funding. If you want to learn more about this initiative and how you might become involved, visit their website
