AGF News

Farewell to Lindsay Mitchell, Hello Emma Schneider

AGF bids farewell to Lindsay Mitchell who has served as a VISTA member for the past year.  She did a terrific job handling our electronic communications, social media and video productions. She also developed an AGF communications plan which we will be able to pursue in the future.

We also want to welcome our new VISTA member, Emma Schneider, who comes to us from Portage Wisconsin.  She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a major in Spanish and Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies. Emma will be assuming Lindsay's responsibilities in the communications arena as well as supporting AGF's efforts to encourage greater collaboration among funders and between funders and nonprofits.

Public Policy pageAZ capitol building

AGF has launched a new Public Policy webpage which provides links to a wide variety of resources for organizations just beginning to explore public policy work or those that are already engaged. One item posted here is the Public Policy Matrix which lists both nonprofits and funders who are engaged along the entire continuum of public policy work.  If you want to see the wide variety of activities currently underway in Arizona, check this resource out!

AGF's Public Policy Delegation Presents at the Neighborhood Funders Group Conference

Four members of AGF attended the Neighborhood Funders Group Annual conference in Albuquerque on Oct. 27-28.  Many national funders have expressed concern about funding in Arizona, given the string of negative news stories (SB1070, etc.) emanating from our state. AGF members were invited to make a presentation to national funders stressing the importance of funding in Arizona.  The reviews from funders attending this session were very encouraging.  A slideshow from their presentation is available at the AGF website, and the video will be posted soon.  For more information contact Kim VanPelt at SLHI (602-385-6500)or Pat Miles of the McMiles Foundation (480-945-6644).

December 7, 2011: How will the Federal Budget Impact the Poor? Webinar

The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, is tasked to develop a plan to reduce the deficit by "at least $1.5 trillion" by November 23, 2011. Success in crafting a deal will lead to a House and Senate vote, while failure to produce a plan will result in painful automatic spending cuts in 2013. Either way, advocates and service providers predict more pain for low-income and vulnerable citizens. This webinar for funders will provide an overview of the Supercommittee's proposal, outline the next steps and possible outcomes in the legislative process, offer insight into how these decisions will effect programs and policies focused on the poor and vulnerable, and discuss the role of philanthropy, key levers to address the challenges and guidance about what to watch moving forward.
