Greetings!

Welcome to our first newsletter. Broadly speaking, we are four things at IoT Works: venture firm, incubator, angel investor and entrepreneur. We are structured this way to build, support, and buy companies that are creating the Internet of Things.

We invite you to share your vision for the Internet of Things. Send me a note or reply to this email with your ideas. In the meanwhile, enjoy a few insights into the IoT happenings linked below.

Yours in all things IoT,
Amanda

A little more about the Internet of Things

In 2008, the number of devices connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on Earth. That's right. There are more devices tapping into the Internet than people on Earth to use them. Cisco's infographic provides a visual representation of the increase in "things" connected to the Internet.

Kickstarter project of the hour

The ArduSat (Arduino - satellite) will be the first open platform allowing the general public to design and run their own space-based applications, games and experiments, and steer the onboard cameras to take pictures on-demand.

ArduSat is a miniature cubic satellite, measuring 10 cm along each edge and weighing about 1 kg. Onboard it will have a suite of 25+ sensors, including three cameras, a Geiger counter, spectrometer, magnetometer and more (check out the FAQ below for a full list). The sensors are connected to a bank of user-programmable Arduino processors, which run your application or experiment, gathering data from the space environment.

IoT technology development

What is it we want to do with the Internet of Things? It's already here. It's in the subway, it's in our sneakers, it's in our wine bottles. The internet is becoming like electricity; it's there. You don't think about it as the internet anymore.

The Internet of Things is about connecting things through the cloud. Living in an IoT world means we will use this technology for fun, wellness, games and new media.

Cows and sensors

You can find almost anything online these days - including the vital statistics of cows. A Dutch company called Sparked has created a sensor implant that can measure a cow's vital signs, with the data transmitted to a server for access by farmers, who can instantly determine the health of the herd and respond when an animal is sick or pregnant. The animals' movements, eating habits and response to environmental factors can also be monitored.

Kickstarter Success Story: Twine

Twine lets you create Internet-connected systems and objects anywhere you have WiFi. Compact, low-power hardware and real-time web software work together to make networked physical computing simple and versatile.

A durable 2.5" square provides WiFi connectivity, internal and external sensors, and two AAA batteries that keep it running for months. A simple web app allows to you quickly set up your Twine with human-friendly rules - no programming needed. And if you're more adventurous, you can connect your own sensors and use HTTP to have Twine send data to your own app.
