The Economic Driver

May 18,  2011

A publication of the North Port Economic Development Corporation

Greetings!

The North Port Economic Development Corporation is facilitating four initiatives that are expected to stimulate the construction industry and create catalysts that encourage additional building and the acquisition of new jobs in the private sector. We anticipate a multi-million dollar construction budget that could break ground as early as the spring of 2014.

These initiatives will be guided through individual teams made up of North Port EDC investors. Community involvement will be encouraged through polls, surveys and community meetings.

The four ACTION Initiatives are:

  • Vision In Progress ACTION Initiative will develop a vision for the Toledo Blade Corridor that supports vibrant economic engines presented in the "Toledo Blade Vision Plan." That plan identified economic engines including health & wellness, research & technology, education & career, sports & recreation, culture & entertainment, and destination markets.
  • Center for Creative Retirement ACTION Initiative will develop a creative/imaginative retirement center that builds a residential retirement community around lifelong learning, culture, and the arts.
  • Downtown ACTION Initiative will develop a vision for a downtown district in North Port, that embraces culture and entertainment, centered around an educational institution. This district could be developed along the 41 corridor and include the expansion of the University of South Florida - North Port campus.
  • Warm Mineral Springs ACTION Initiative will develop a vision for Warm Mineral Springs that establishes WMS as an economic engine for North Port. This would be a comprehensive vision that extends beyond the 81 acres purchased by the County and City.

The team leaders are building their teams, and we expect to report back to the community by mid July.

We are enthusiastically moving forward and we welcome your participation. Please consider investing in the North Port EDC, and partnering in the economic future of North Port.

Have a great day

Florida Climbs Pro-Business Ranks Second in US

Jacob Ogles, Jacob.Ogles@srqmediagroup.com

A state hit especially hard by the Great Recession is coming out with a stronger reputation as a good place to do business, according to Chief Executive magazine. The publication named Florida as the No. 2 best state in which to do business. The puts it behind only Texas and means the state has surpassed North Carolina in the rankings. California was ranked No. 50 on the list.

Local business leaders say the news is another sign Florida has pivoted toward a business-friendly regulatory environment and that the nation is noticing. "The whole state of Florida has been so negatively impacted by the recession, and in response everybody has made a concerted effort to do a better job with attraction of business," said Shaun Merriman, chairman of The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and president of Gateway Bank of Southwest Florida.

Gov. Rick Scott touted improved rankings on such lists during a recent visit with local Chamber leaders, Merriman said. The Chamber chairman praised the governor's efforts in Tallahassee to reduce regulations and turn the focus on job creation.

Chief Executive gave Florida a five-star rating (out of five) in living environment and four-star ratings for workforce quality and for taxation and regulation. The publication noted Florida led the nation in domestic migration into the state and that the state and local tax burden was lower than the nation as a whole.

At a local level, Merriman identified several local efforts helping this part of the state become more business-friendly. Regional incentives programs for companies promising to create jobs in exchange for having property taxes cut by as much as 50 percent over 10 years. The CareerEdge program provided targeted work skills training to create a more qualified workforce. The International Business Council is assisting in export, joint venture and licensing agreements to access international markets.

While the government is responsible for economic development, it is the private sector that makes economic development happen, and the North Port EDC will focus its efforts on working with both the public, civic, and private sectors to create economic engines and catalysts for economic development.
