Opportunity Acquisition Update

The North Port EDC is proud to announce the opening of the School of Opportunity.

"The School of Opportunity is a direct result of the efforts of the North Port Economic Development Corporation's 'opportunity acquisition' program'," stated TinaRae Gregoire, the schools president. "They identified the need and then connected the people who could build the company. They identified real estate, technology and community partners that would be necessary for the success of the business, and we are thankful for their support and guidance."

Partners Jacqueline Moore, Heather Bartolotta and Suzette Jones bring a diverse background and a firm foundation of entrepreneurship and business expertise to the company.

Mimi Steger, President of the North Port Economic Development Corporation added, "While the North Port Economic Development Corporation helped facilitate the birth of this exciting venture, it is clearly the people like TinaRae, Heather, Jacqueline and Suzette who bring the knowledge and passion to the project. This is an exciting time for The School of Opportunity, the North Port EDC and the City of North Port."

The School of Opportunity will initially be offering classes at the University of South Florida - Sarasota Manatee- North Port.

The School of Opportunity is expected to employ 10-15 people over the next year with an average annual salary of $40-45,000. The company required no government money and received no economic incentives.

NORTH PORT CITY COMMISSION VOTES FOR GROWTH. North Port has placed a two-year moratorium on transportation and solid waste impact fees to kick-start commercial and residential construction in Sarasota County's largest city. Commission Chair Tom Jones said: "We have the population to grow, we have available property that's priced correctly, and we're developing a reputation as being a community that works with businesses, promotes business growth and is dedicated to economic development." The Community's Economic Development Strategic Plan

The City of North Port (City) recently executed a contract with the John Scott Dailey Florida Institute of Government (FIOG) at the University of South Florida to develop an Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP) Update for the City.

Visit their website where they will keep citizens and stakeholders informed of their progress. The city wants this process to include a broad range of avenues for reaching the public and getting maximum public participation. Their goal is to get critical community "buy-in" to the Economic Development Strategic Plan and its resulting initiatives. These sessions will be utilized to weigh community opinion on goals and objectives, vision, and recommendations.
