February 20,  2011

A publication of the North Port Economic Development Corporation

Greetings!

After several months of establishing the organizational foundations of the North Port EDC, we are excited to focus now on moving forward by growing our membership and further defining the Community Development Initiatives that were recently announced.  Communication continues to be an important element of the North Port EDC, and we recently had the opportunity to speak to Alex Sink from the Florida Next Foundation at the Manasota SCORE Annual Awards Banquet this past Monday about the North Port EDC's initiatives.  We hope you join us in our efforts to create what Sink entertained as the possibility for "Florida to be the startup state, and North Port the startup city".

Have a great day

NPEDC Announces
Community Development Initiative

The elements of the North Port EDC ACTION initiative designed to stimulate the construction industry and create catalysts that encourage additional building and acquisition of new jobs in the private sector, was announced on February 8.

The initiatives are expected to generate millions in construction related projects.

Details of the initiative can be found in the "Projects" section of the website.

NPEDC Defines its role

In an effort to clarify the difference between the North Port EDC and the city's Business and Economic Development Advisory Board, the North Port EDC Board has clearly defined its role as follows:

  The North Port EDC will:

Facilitate projects that are developed by the NPEDC. This includes the continuation of the "Project Development" and "ACTION" programs. These programs focus on developing our community resources and developing economic metabolism for the city.  As a result of these programs activity occurs which focuses on specific, defined outcomes.

Connect economic development prospects with community resources.  An example would be to arrange meetings between the prospect and community leaders to discuss the assets of the city.  In this area, we are a resource to the City of North Port's Economic Development Division.

Advocate for economic development to the city. This entails an open dialogue with the city regarding obstacles that stand in the way of economic development and solutions that address those obstacles.

Refer business leads to the City of North Port's Economic Development Division and follow up with the City to obtain the results of the referral.

The role has been added to the website.

While the government is responsible for economic development, it is the private sector that makes economic development happen, and the North Port EDC will focus its efforts on working with both the public, civic, and private sectors to create economic engines and catalysts for economic development.

The North Port Economic Development Corporation is privately funded.
