The Economic Driver

December 12,  2011

A publication of the North Port Economic Development Corporation

Greetings!

November was an exciting month for us. Our advisory board had its first meeting and the dialogue was informative, constructive, and positive as we discussed North Port's economic role in the region. This board of senior executives from around the region meets quarterly.

We had our first community discussion on economic development on November 9, 2011. The sellout crowd of regional business and civic leaders participated in a lively discussion about the future and how we can meet its challenges. A major focus was on education and the health care industry. The keynote speaker, Al Latimer, Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships with Enterprise Florida, said "This is truly a regional approach and I applaud the North Port EDC for putting it together."

We have updated the website with new information and links. Be sure to check it out.

Community Economic Development News

A Vision North Port discussion group is leading a movement to create a PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) ordinance in the city. A PACE program is designed to encourage the use of renewable energy (e.g., solar) in the home and business. The discussion group is speaking with City Commissioners, staff, and community groups about moving this program forward. The NPEDC board has endorsed the creation of a PACE ordinance at its December meeting.

The North Port EDC has been nominated for the North Port Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. Wish us luck. According to Mimi Steger, NPEDC President, "This is quite an honor to be nominated. It is encouraging to see the community recognize the work that we have done in such a short period of time."

Discussions with a number of companies considering moving to North Port are progressing. Businesses recognize the value of a private EDC and are seeking us out. We are extremely busy.

While the government is responsible for economic development, it is the private sector, who makes economic development happen, and we will focus our efforts on working with both the public, civic and private sector to create economic engines and catalysts for economic development.

The North Port Economic Development Corporation is privately funded.
