Community Conversation
The following was written by Mark Barbash, an independent consultant on economic development.
Big Ideas for Jobs report points out the obvious: Political will is the issue, not a shortage of ideas.
A group called Big Ideas for Jobs, which is a project sponsored by Annie E. Casey and Kellogg Foundations, and UC-Berkeley has released a 35 page report with a list of "big ideas" to create jobs, ranging from investment in infrastructure, facility upgrades, varioius types of hiring credits and others.
As I read the report, I was both heartened and a little bit distressed.
I was heartened because of the substance of the Report. It is filled with a wide range of proposals, vetted by some very smart and progressive minds around the country. These are truly big ideas, with big price tags and potentially major impact. There is no shortage of creativity in the US.
I was distressed when I thought about how to actually get some of these done. We are trapped in a political cycle that points to the next election, rather than the next generation. Our leaders have been forced into a discussion about tax and budget cuts instead of a balanced approach to job creation.
And at at the same time, the number of citizens who have EXHAUSTED their unemployment benefits are are becoming part of the permanently jobless has reached some type of record high.
No wonder the political pundits this morning were talking about the rise of a third party next year.
Here's a link to an interview with Karen Chapple, Director of the Institute at Berkeley.
