The Communicator is a forum to keep you posted on upcoming events and information, share our stories, and ignite Maverick pride. With a mix of regular contributors and an open invitation for you to provide content, the Communicator will keep you apprised of what's happening in Maverick Country!

Theatre

Peter Pan the Musical is a tale which never ages. Children and adults alike have all fallen under the spell of Neverland, a place where children can fly and exciting, frightening adventures happen every day.

 

In 1985, Piers Chater Robinson adapted J.M. Barrie's book for the stage, and now, 25 years later, his innovative Peter Pan musical score is well known, loved, and performed worldwide. The ever-popular characters are still there - Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael, the dastardly Captain Hook and his sidekick Smee, Tiger Lily, the Lost Boys, pirates, Neverland indians, fairies, Nana the pet dog and, of course, that scary crocodile.

Waxing and Waning | Steffani Frideres (Encaustic)

Exhibit Runs June 11-July 6
Steffani Frideres' art is a fantastic hybrid of photography and encaustic painting. Encaustic painting is an incredibly involved process that requires patience and precision. The contrast between the photography and encaustic designs creates a sublime experience.

Library 

 

To celebrate the start of the 2012 Olympics, the library will host a campus-wide "Tea in the Library" on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. The event, themed "Go Team USA," will focus on Olympic games, British culture, and the city of London!
 
The librarians and library staff members are busy this summer participating in Maverick Connection, the new student orientation held each week. Librarians are excited about inviting new students to come to the library!
 
Mark your calendars for the upcoming Writers in Performance series that kicks off on Thursday, September 20, at 7 p.m., with a special presentation by Tony Diaz, novelist and leader of El Libro Traficante (Book Smuggler) movement.

Maverick Connection: New Set-Up for New Student Orientation

  

maverick sealLSC-Montgomery's new student orientation is now bigger and better than ever! Maverick Connection, a two-part, mandatory orientation for all first-time-in-college students, will ease the transition into college and prepare students for success.

 

After completing an online orientation (part one), students will attend an on-campus session (part two) to get one-on-one registration assistance; hear the latest study/success tips from advisors; learn about the academic programs offered; and see the campus resources available. Plus, they'll connect with other students, tour the campus, and get their student i.d. card.

 

Maverick Connection takes place every Wednesday throughout the summer, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., in the Recital Hall. A separate, more compact version of Maverick Connection is held at LSC-Conroe Center every Thursday throughout the summer, from 3-5 p.m. Students must pre-register for their preferred session.

 

Maverick Connection is a joint effort by student services, financial aid, admissions, student life, the business office, advisors, counselors, and faculty members to provide new students with the best start possible.

 

Please note that there will be limited services available in the Student Services Center on Wednesday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., as most of the staff will be assisting with orientation.

Convocation 2012

 

Don't miss LSC-Montgomery's Convocation 2012... it's sure to be a HIT!

 

Start the 2012-13 academic year with a home run. Be in your seat by 10 a.m. for the opening pitch on Tuesday, August 21, in the Performing Arts Center (Building D). In 2012-13, Maverick Country is all about "Hitting New Heights."

 

If you haven't guessed yet, the theme of this year's convocation is baseball - the teamwork it requires to form and maintain a winning atmosphere; the individual skills necessary to contribute toward team success; and the enthusiasm and spirit required to get through a lengthy season. All of these qualities apply to us here at LSC-Montgomery.

 

So, come to Convocation 2012 to: 

  • Check out your new teammates (as well as our veteran stars)
  • Celebrate last year's team and individual highlights (as well as the 2012 Summer Spirit Challenge entries & winners)
  • Review the game plan for 2012-13 and beyond!
  • Walk away with a special Maverick "giveaway"

* Note: There is no pre-game meal (i.e., breakfast) before this year's convocation. Instead, there will be a faculty/staff post-game lunch in the Commons (building A) at noon, immediately following Convocation 2012.

One of the initiatives to come out of our visioning sessions last year was to further promote our student success stories. While we do this in a variety of ways, one of the more visible ways was installed last week. In several buildings on campus, you will notice student, faculty and staff testimonials via large posters (wall art) down the hallways. Meant to inspire our current and future students, many of these posters feature LSC-Montgomery alumni who are doing great things out in the community.


The first phase includes 50 posters:


In Building G, we have posters installed along both major hallways on the 1st floor. (The 2nd floor is part of phase II.)


In Building F, we have posters installed on the 2nd and 3rd floor hallways.


In Building B, we have posters installed along the long hallway just past the Luby's grab-and-go area. (Other 1st and 2nd floor hallways are part of phase II.)


At LSC-Conroe Center, we have posters installed on the 1st floor hallway of the Academic Building. (The 2nd floor hallway and the Workforce Education Building are part of phase II.)


Phase II will also include the Student Services Center (bldg. C), the Commons Building (A), Performing Arts Center (D),  Music Hall (H), and Library. Existing posters in the Administration Building will be updated and expanded. This should happen later in the 2012-2013 academic year.

In March, the College Relations office worked with LSC-Conroe Center to produce a new cinema advertisement, which runs prior to each movie shown at both The Grand Cinema and the Star Cinema Grill in Conroe. The new ad focuses on how easy it is to get started in college using a "Ready, Set, Go!" theme, as well as the branded "Open Doors" tag.  The result is a memorable, engaging promotion that let's area residents know "there's a new campus in town."

LSC-Montgomery Hosts Conroe ISD 8th Grade Leadership Academy

 

Monty and studentsAlmost 60 soon-to-be 8th graders from each of Conroe ISD's junior high schools visited our campus in early June as part of CISD's 8th Grade Leadership Academy. The students, who are selected by their teachers and counselors, were given a tour of the campus, as well as an in-depth look at the LSC-Montgomery Biotechnology Institute, hosted by Dr. Danny Kainer, professor of biotechnology and director of the Institute. Additionally, Wendell Williams, vice president of student success, gave the students a motivational and informative presentation about the importance of higher education in their future. Dr. Don Stockton, Conroe ISD superintendent, was also present for the event.

Approximately two dozen LSC-Montgomery faculty, staff and students joined together as part of the college's float entry in The Woodlands annual Fourth of July Celebration in Town Center. The float promoted the college as well as this week's theatre production of "Peter Pan." The characters of Wendy and Peter Pan waved from the college's truck, while volunteers passed out college "eye patches" (a la Captain Hook), LSC-Montgomery tattoos, and more. A good (and hot!) time was had by all, including our very own Monty the Maverick.
