ALSITE President
As we approach the end of the year I want to first say that I have enjoyed serving as the president of ALSITE for 2012. As stated before, we have an outstanding membership that has made the job easy and enjoyable. You can be assured that ALSITE is in good hands for the next several years with the officers that are poised to lead.
You will continue to see some positive changes to the website, our constant contact emails, and the electronic meeting registration process through the website and pay pal. Our new website format should allow us to keep our information current and be a more useful resource for our membership. We will provide some details and get some feedback at the fall business meeting about the website.
The HMR Scholarships Fund continues to be an exceptional aspect of our section. Our scholarship awards, the endowment, and fund raising sets us apart and continues to be the standard among all of the sections in the Southern District of ITE. With individual donations in decline and a challenging economic environment in which to garner a moderate return on the endowment, it is becoming harder to keep up to the standard we have set for ourselves. I am sure this is an issue that will continue to need attention in the next year and beyond.
Please be sure to register for our upcoming meeting to be held on Thursday, October 4 at the Montgomery Zoo and the Mann Museum. You should have already received a registration email that allowed you to register and immediately and pay by credit card or bring a check to the meeting. Using this registration process is a great help for the LAC and their planning.
Last but most importantly, we have a national election coming up in less than 50 days. For over 235 years, millions of people have given literally everything to provide us the freedoms that we enjoy. Please honor these people and our Country by registering and taking the time to vote on Election Day.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Montgomery. |

Auburn University ITE Student Chapter
Submitted by Dr. Rod Turochy
The Auburn University Student Chapter had many activities during the spring semester. Among the guest speakers were: Jeff Stephenson from Sain Associates in Birmingham, Stan Biddick of ALDOT, Kris Kiefer from ALDOT, and Bob Kolar, private consultant. Five chapter members attended the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in January. Four chapter members attended the spring ALSITE meeting in Birmingham and participated in the Traffic Bowl. Two chapter members attended the ALSITE annual meeting in Gulf Shores in June. Also, February 24 was E-Day for Auburn University (open house for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering) and the ITE Student Chapter had the responsibility of managing transportation for the visitors by greeting and counting passengers, as well as trying to answer questions they had.
The chapter has several plans for fall semester. Regular monthly meetings will continue, and speakers are being scheduled. Topics of interest include highway safety in Alabama, current and future transportation projects in the Auburn area, and current and future parking traffic and parking projects at Auburn University. The efforts to educate children about civil engineering and traffic safety will continue as well, and visits to an elementary school to speak with the 4th and 5th grade children are planned. Several chapter members are also expected to attend the fall ALSITE meeting that will be held at the Montgomery Zoo on Thursday, October 4.
The chapter looks forward for the activities of fall semester. The student chapter officers for 2012-2013 are Scott Seidband, Luana Ozelim, and Kelly Evans. |
UAB ITE Student Chapter
Submitted by Dr. Virginia Sisiopiku
On September 6, 2012 the UAB ITE Student chapter participated in the School of Engineering Welcome Back Event. The event allowed transportation students and faculty to share information about careers in transportation engineering with interested engineering students and other visitors and recruit new student members.
The UAB ITE Student chapter had a field trip planned for September 20, 2012. Student members will visit the Traffic Management Center of the City of Birmingham and get a close look at the city's traffic control and monitor center. |
University of Alabama ITE Student Chapter
Submitted by Dr. Steven Jones
It's hard to believe how fast the summer has flown by! The Alabama Student Chapter assisted the Auburn Student Chapter's Trip Generation Study led by Dr. Turochy.
The fall semester started on August 22, and things are very busy at the University. The Alabama Student Chapter is in the process of securing its plans for the fall. Chapter events for the fall will likely include Section Meetings with guest speakers, attendance at various professional organization meetings, technical field trips, and services projects. New Student Chapter officers will be elected during the month of November. |
