In 2010-2011 NYEP served 8 youth in the Northern Nevada Community. Of the 8 youth served; 1 dropped out, 6 of the 7 graduated from high school, 1 is pursuing her GED, 1 received a full ride scholarship to the University of Virginia, 1 is attending TMCC, 4 of the 7 were employed and 100% did not become pregnant or involved in the criminal justice system.

Our Community Living Program provides housing, food, clothing and programming intended to offer older homeless teens the resources and opportunities to transition into self sufficient young adults who are contributing members of our community.

NYEP resident Sol got her first job this month and we could not be more proud of her!!! Getting a job is not always easy. We asked Sol what the 5 most important things that she feels contributed to her getting the job, and this is what she listed:

1. Look hard and be consistent
2. Don't give up when rejected
3. Look professional at interviews
4. Be you
5. Really want the job

We think these are some really great tips!! We think Sol will do great at her new job, and we wish her the best of luck!!

Nevada Youth Empowerment Project
NEWSLETTER           November 2011
Monica - RGJ
Dear Friends of NYEP,

There are growing number of young people today that are undereducated and unprepared for our workforce making it impossible for them to live productively on their own.  Many times these young people have little to no positive adult guidance to ensure they attain success skills, and will generally spend their free time doing unfulfilling and meaningless activities.  However, Reno/Sparks is not alone.  The numbers of these youth are on the rise.  They continue to double each year across the nation and nothing will change that if nothing changes.  The question I pose - do we sit back and do little to nothing or do we get proactive?

Each day it is not uncommon to drive by certain areas of town and see young people just "hanging out".  Many times these young people are dirty, poorly dressed and inappropriate in manner.  It's hard to imagine that things will improve unless we, as adults who know better, do something relevant to address the problem.  Without safe, stabilized housing, it is certain that GED preparation, college attendance, skills training and preparing for employment will be of little importance to someone in crisis (no conistent stable housing or food). Just as for adults, young people must be stabilized with basic needs before expected to attend skills training or obtain employment.

In 2007 after recognizing that there were no housing programs for willing youth who desired to become independent, I founded NYEP to provide supervised supportive housing.  Over the past four years NYEP has worked hard to develop relevant independent living programming that teaches self sufficiency skills and produces positive resident outcomes (high school graduation, employment, permanent housing and avoidance of pregnancy and criminal involvement).  We have a clear understanding of our entrance criteria, program expectations and how we determine success.

This month, Black Bear House will begin serving males between 17-21 using NYEP's Community Living Program model.  This will mean that our community provides 12 beds for transition aged youth.  It means we are doing something proactive for the future of youth and our world.  It means we care through action.

Please join us in truly addressing the needs of our local youth by supporting NYEP's Community Living Program, an independent living curriclum that is producing positive outcomes that we can all be proud of!  And, please be sure to attend Black Bear House's Grand Opening on November 15th from 4pm-7pm.

Thank you,

Monica DuPea

What is morality?

What is a true friend?

What does it mean to be in love?

New HYTS Leadership Team

In June of this year, NYEP received a capacity building grant from Charles Schwab to create a plan to address the needs of transition aged youth with an emphasis on housing.  We are calling the project New HYTS - New Housing for Youth in Transition to Self Sufficiency.  On November 2nd, the leadership group met for the fourth time.  This project is expected to be completed and presented to the community July 2012.

This project includes convening youth-serving organizations, other key stakeholders, and youth representatives in

Washoe County to develop an actionable plan to support vulnerable youth (ages 18-21) in making a successful

transition to adulthood. A primary outcome of the process will be the development of transitional housing for youth to fill an unmet need in this community and ensure stability for youth during transition.

This planning process will leverage the considerable work, collaboration and investment of resources already in place or underway in Northern Nevada. It is designed with the recognition that no single system has the sufficient

perspective, capital or capacity to comprehensively address the needs of vulnerable youth. In fact, a secondary outcome anticipated from the process will be the creation of partnerships that are formalized by memoranda of

understanding and supported by recognized advisory bodies with the charge to address service gaps and create a

seamless care system.

In order for this plan to succeed, the process will be conducted from a youth-centered (rather than system-driven)

perspective that is both strengths-based and practical in the current economic and policy environment. This approach incorporates valuable lessons learned from previous capacity building efforts both locally and across the country, which

underscore that strong leadership and meaningful collaboration are foundational to success. Most importantly, it allows Washoe County to move smoothly from planning to implementation by building on the current knowledge base and strategic planning activities already underway related to this population by RAAH, the Washoe County Children's Mental Health Consortium, and others.

If you have any questions about the project or would like to be included in the stakeholder list, please contact Monica DuPea at monica.nyep@gmail.com.

MIeshaTell us a little about yourself: I'm a native Nevadan, originally from Las Vegas. I have three younger brothers, two of whom also live here in Reno. We are very close. In my spare time I love to go to concerts, watch movies, cook, hang out with my boyfriend, play video games, and read comic books. I'm a bit of a nerd and I love to have fun. I have a large group of friends and I enjoy life.

What do you do at NYEP?: I do a little bit of everything. I see the girls almost every day. I talk to them about their lives and their program at NYEP, I help them cook, complete household tasks, solve problems, search for jobs, and just about anything else you can think of. From "telling it like it is" to taking them to appointments, I'm here to help the residents of NYEP and I love doing it.

What do you like about working at NYEP?: I love that I am given the tools to actually help young people become independent. I have the freedom to be honest and helpful in the ways I think are best and the support and encouragement of my coworkers. We are a family at NYEP and it is a joy to work with people you love.

What is the best advice you have given and received?: My dad once told me, "99% of the things I have worried about in my life never even happened." It has always made me less concerned with the "what ifs" in life and that is a free feeling.

If you could give the world one piece of advice what would it be?: No matter what anyone else is doing, always act in ways that you will be proud of in the future.

to learn to be comfortable with my own image.

What do you like about living at NYEP?:I love that I can be myself without any judgement and learn about friendships that are honest and true. I just love everyone there. (:

What is the best advice you have given and received?: The best advice I can give is keep your head held high no matter what challenges come your way you can over come it no matter how big or small you are. (: The  best advice I've received was you still have to chill
inside no matter how old you are and live life to the fullest.

If you could give the world one piece of advice what would it be? : Live life as though it has just begun. Keep the soul calm and happy. <3
