A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends of NYEP,
Summertime is almost here and lots of things are happening at NYEP! This past month, residents have earned their green thumbs by helping to plant NYEP's vegetable garden and learned organizational skills through a staff-guided spring cleaning day.
NYEP is also very happy to report that 100% of our residents attending high school are graduating this month! The second week of June will be joyous (and very busy) as proud staff members attend four ceremonies at Lawlor Events Center.
We have lots of exciting things planned for summer, from group volunteering events, to fundraisers, to our annual trip
- so stay tuned! To get NYEP news, as it happens, add us on Facebook.
Just a reminder: Our Napa's Backyard fundraiser is coming up on June 17th. Tickets are still available at the discounted rate until June 16th. Contact Monica (monica.nyep@gmail.com) for VIP tables. We are still seeking donated items and services for our silent auction. If you would like to make a donation, please contact our VISTA, Cindy (cindy.nyep@gmail.com).
Thank you,
Monica DuPea |

| HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION PLAN CHECKLIST | | |
Graduating from high schoolis an exciting and busy time filled with both celebrations and responsibilities. Making a checkilist of things that need to be done before and after graduating can help ease stress so you can enjoy the last few week of school with friends.
You should start a month before the actual date.
Graduation Party Planning
Plan a party to celebrate your graduation. Choose a theme or color scheme based on your interests, what you plan to do after high school or your school colors. Choose a location and set the date and time. Weekends are generally best, and graduation parties are typically held the weekend following the actual graduation. However, if you know a lot of your friends are also having parties you may want to coordinate schedules so you can attend one anothers' parties. Send out invitations two to six weeks prior to the graduation date. Depending on the number of guests you plan to invite, you may want to have the party catered. If not, create a simple menu and purchase decorations such as streamers, balloons, graduation year confetti and graduation banners. Don't forget a cap and tassle cake.
Graduation Announcements
After ensuring you have completed all the requirements necessary to receive a diploma, order graduation announcements. Most schools have a designated company that handles all announcement designs and orders. Look through the options and make your selections, then send in the paperwork and payment by the posted deadline to receive your announcements in time. Ideally, you should mail these out several weeks prior to the graduation ceremony. Keep in mind that many schools limit the number of people who are allowed to attend the graduation ceremony by issuing students a specific number of tickets. If you only have a limited number of tickets, you might want to enclose a little note that explains why everyone cannot attend and you'd love to see them at your party. Also state that the graduation party invitations will arrive separately, as etiquette guidelines recommend they should be mailed separately.
Graduation Rehearsal
There is always a graduation rehearsal before the actual walk, which is typically held the day before or morning of graduation. Check with your school administration to find out when this is, and arrive on time. Listen to the directions so you understand where to go when and what to do during the ceremony.
Graduation
Arrive early so you can get good parking and are included in attendance. Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you are well-hydrated for the big event. Make sure your family knows where to park and arrives early as well to get the best seating possible. Make sure that you know the dress code for your graduation ahead of time and have all of the items that you will need to be dressed appropriately.
Graduation Thank-you Etiquette
Send out thank-you notes for any gifts you receive and to thank people for attending your party. These should be formal thank-you notes. Some graduation announcement companies also give you the option of purchasing thank-you cards with the school emblem on them. If you didn't include a graduation photo with the announcement, include one with the thank-you card. Send these out within a month of graduation. |
| NYEP LOVES VOLUNTEERING!!! | | | On Saturday May 21st, NYEP residents and staff volunteered as a group for the Girl Scouts of Northern Nevada's annual Safety Fair. We donned our aprons and gloves and spent the day outside, grilling hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggies and serving hungry fair attendees. We had lots of fun bonding and the girls gained some valuable work experience. Some of the residents really shined working with the public and it was great to see them in action. We plan to do lots more group volunteering projects this summer and we are looking for ideas. If you work for a local non-profit and you have an event coming up where you could use a group of 4-8 hard working ladies, please contact Jeanine at jeanine.nyep@gmail.com or (775)200-4030. |

| NEW REENGAGEMENT CENTERS IN RENO | | |
Big News!
The school district was recently awarded money to "re-engage" kids (14 and older) who are dropped out, or credit deficient, or with limited or no hope of graduating from high school.
Their locations are: at The Shelter, at Sparks "Community Learning Center", at The Boys and Girls Club, at O'Brien Middle School, and at The Children's Cabinet. At the school locations, they'll have a school within a school concept, i.e., classes that are in a discreet, separate location or after school, and night school. All the centers will have some flexible hours.
At all the sites, they have set up computers and classrooms to do the work of this initiative; to get kids ready to move on educationally. Small group instruction, individual instruction, computer assisted learning, credit recovery, guidance counseling; this, their basic mission. They will be doing outreach around town, and are actively recruiting as we speak kids 14 years old and older. Please contact Tom Murtha at Tom.Murtha@washoecourts.us with any questions. |
