A Letter From Our Executive Director

Greetings!!

We are gearing up and preparing for our biggest fundraiser to date, Napa's Backyard. This event is a food and wine pairing competition along with a silent auction being held by Charlie Palmer located inside the Grand Sierra Resort on June 17, 2011. Tickets and VIP tables are still available, there is more information in this newsletter about this event. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Our residents have been working very hard and we are very proud of their accomplishments. Jannina and Nina have both started jobs. We are excited to see them begin their journey towards financial independence. Jazz was recognized as "Most Improved Student"  at Damonte High and was presented with an award by the Reno South Rotary Club. She worked very hard preparing her speech and we were happy and proud to be at the speech presentations and award ceremony to support her.

Dirian, one of NYEP's graduates, was selected as a speaker for the National Foster Care All Stars. She will be traveling to Oregon this month to speak and advocate for youth in foster care. We hope she has a safe trip and look forward to watching her grow as a public speaker.

We are proud of all of our accomplishments so far this year as we continue to work towards reaching our 2011 goals. We have been working hard, but made sure to make time to have fun. NYEP held its first annual NYEP sleep over during spring break. The residents and staff had a great time and are looking forward to next year's sleepover. We are thankful for all of your support. We hope for continued success throughout 2011.

Thank you,
Monica DuPea

Celebrate Mothers Day Even if You Can Not Be With Your Mother
Celebrate all the Mothers in Your Life

Mother's Day can be a fun holiday for anyone. Mothers everywhere are showered with gifts and are able to spend the day with their loved ones. But what do you do if you don't have a mother? This can be a tough day. Here are some tips to have a great day anyway.

1. Celebrate with another important woman in your life. Maybe you were raised by your grandmother, aunt, or an adopted mother. Or perhaps you have a best friend or mentor that has been like a mother to you. Show this person how much you appreciate her by taking her out to brunch, sending her flowers, or by spending the day with her.

2. Spend Mother's Day with one of your friend's families. Help your friends appreciate their moms by tagging along on another family's Mother's Day celebration. You will be surprised my how delighted many families will be to have you join in on their Mother's Day.

3. Spend time with your friends who don't have mothers or who are unable to see their mothers. It may be fun to host a Mother's Day party at your home. Consider hosting a brunch or getting manicures and pedicures.

  4. Appreciate all the mothers in your life. You probably know someone who is a great mother or is like a great mother to you. You probably notice them juggling their time between their work and family life. Let them know that you notice by making them a card, buying them flowers, or by taking them out to lunch. Just because this person in not your mother doesn't mean you can't appreciate her as a mother.

5. Just skip Mother's Day. Just because it's Mother's Day, doesn't mean you have to celebrate it. This mother's day could be your catch-up on my work day, or hang out with my boyfriend day, or just another lazy Sunday. Celebrate a beautiful Sunday in any way that makes you happy!
