Monica - black borderA Letter from our Executive Director

Dear Friends of NYEP,

This has been an exciting year for us so far!! We hope that it has been the same for you. We are currently working on building workforce partnerships, developing healthier eating habits, converting our garage into an art studio and becoming even more involved in our community. We have set goals for this year and we are looking forward to accomplishing even more in 2011 than we did in 2010.

This last month we were able to attend the Cops vs Robbers Charity Basketball Game at the Evelyn Mount Community Center benefiting Sparks High School. We had a great time and were happy to support a great cause. We were also able to clean out our garage and hold a garage sale. This was great because it gave our residents an opportunity to make some money and learn how to put on a yard sale.  We are also totally excited about getting our art studio up and running so our residents can showcase their talents!

We are currently accepting donations for art supplies and a new washing machine. If you are interested in making a donation or volunteering to teach our residents a specific skill, please contact us. We are thankful for your support and look forward to getting to know you all even more this year.

How to be a Good Friend

Aristotle said friendship is the thing most necessary to life. We long for the affection of others. One of the measures of how we are managing from day to day is how others feel about us. We care when are friends are fine and we worry when they are not. There are so many ways to express our feelings and show appreciation toward others.

10 Ways to be a Good Friend:

1. Be an equal contributor.

2. Make sure your intentions are of a giving nature and not one of expectation.

3. Communicate openly.

4. Provide a listening ear.

5. Be inspiring and encouraging.

6. Be reliable and honest.

7. Know when to agree and when to disagree, always have your friends best interest at heart.

8. Keep private information private.

9. Share and celebrate successes.

10. Psychological tests prove that when you are smiling, you feel better. You are giving happiness to others when they see you happy. Smiles are infectious, so smile.

Healthy Valentine's Day Snacks

Valentine's Day is a holiday to show your loved ones how much you love and care about them. Creating entertaining and helathy snacks will show your loved one's that you love them  but it will also keep them healthy.

                                  Fruit boquet

Boquet of heart shapped vegetables or fruit

Choose vegetable that can be sliced flat, such as cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, melons or strawberries. Cut the vegetables into slices and use a small heart shapped cookie cutter to cut into the shape of a heart. Stick vegetables on the end of a kabob stick and place into a vace. Serve with a dipping sauce of your choice.

Cinamon Toast Hearts

Toast one or two slices of whole wheat bread until golden brown. Use a large, heart shapped cookie cutter to cut the toast into a heart shape. Spread a thin layer of honey on the toast and sprinkle with cinamon. Place heart on a flat plate and surround with rasberries.
