MonicaA Letter From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends of NYEP,

We hope that you are enjoying your holiday season as much as we are! We had a wonderful family Thanksgiving here at NYEP, during which the residents learned to make several traditional dishes and be good hostesses to their guests.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to the Texas Roadhouse fundraiser. It was great to see your faces and we raised a few hundred dollars! We also gave out some great raffle prizes. Congratulations to the winners!

Christmas is coming up and we are seeking donations to make the holiday special for NYEP's residents. We need age appropriate gifts, gift cards (mall, clothing, movies, resteraunts etc.) supplies to make bath salts (Epson salts, fragrances, jars) and supplies to make flower arrangements. You will also find individual Christmas wish lists for all of our girls in this newsletter, if you would like to donate a gift. Any overages in gifts that we receive will be donated to Project ReStarts Family Shelter. We are also seeking someone to sponsor the cost of Christmas dinner. If you are interested in helping, please call (775) 240-2195.

Sincerly,

Monica DuPea

By R. Morgan Griffin

Feeling down during the holidays can be tough,
especially since you seem so out of step with the world. Everyone else seems to be beaming, ruddy-cheeked, bursting with holiday spirit. You're feeling wretched and exhausted. But here's something to cheer you up the next time you're stuck in a room of revelers at a holiday party: Plenty of them are probably unhappy, too.

So if the family gatherings, the endless parties, and the shopping get you down, you're hardly alone. But people with depression -- or who have had depression in the past -- need to be especially careful when coping with holiday stress. While it might take some conscious effort on your part, you can reduce stress -- and maybe even find some holiday joy, too. Here are some tips.

How to Host a White Elephant Gift Exchange

A White Elephant Gift Exchange is a fun and popular event at Christmas Parties. Each guest comes with a gift and leaves with a gift-but it is what happens in-between that sets the White Elephant Gift Exchange apart from other parties.

Things You'll Need

Party Invitations

Numbered slips of paper

Gifts

1. Send out party invitations to all of the people on your guest list. Specify that everyone should bring a wrapped gift to the party for a White Elephant Gift Exchange, and include any additional rules for the exchange, say a price limit or a stipulation that all gifts must be used items.

2. As guest arrive, have them deposit their gift on a table.

3. Then, pass around a hat with numbered slips of paper (one number for each gift), and have each guest draw a number.

4. The person who draws "1" gets first pick from the pile, and then opens their pick for everyone to see.

5. It's then the turn of the person who drew "2". They can choose to steal the first persons gift or pick another gift from the pile, and open it. If the second person chooses to steal the first persons gift, the first person gets to pick another gift from the pile.

6. The person who drew "3" goes next, and must choose between stealing one of the first two gifts or choosing a new gift from the pile.

7. The game continues in this manner until everyone has a gift.

Tips

  • For a fun twist, leave all of the presents wrapped until the exchange is complete. Then, have everyone open their presents at once.
  • Request that gifts not include To/From tags. Then, see if everyone can guess who brought each gift.

Make Your New Year's Resolution a SMART Goal

1. S = Specific- be specific in the goal and clearly state what it is, why it is, and how it will be achieved.

2. M = Measurable- what does the achieved goal look like? What is the unit of measure that you are striving for?

3. A = Attainable- these goals are attainable by not requiring a large amount of resources or capital. They are also set to make you stretch outside of your comfort zone, but not so difficult that you won't commit to achieving them.

4. R = Realistic-again these goals should all be doable, they don't  require much of a learning curve from where you are, at the moment. They have not been set too far out of your range of expertise, but the bar has been set high enough for satisfying achievement.

5. T = Timely- setting a time frame for achievement is a must for goal setting. Putting an end point on your goals gives you a clear target to work towards.
