STM Pony Tail Drive
The 3rd Annual Pony Tail Drive will once again benefit the Beautiful Lengths Foundation, which is an organization that makes wigs for women with cancer.
The event will take place all day on Thursday, May 12 at STM. Students will sign up for their haircut during their free period. We will have three stylists and the cuts will take the whole class period. Those who wish to donate must understand that they have to be willing to cut at least 8 inches. Please let your children know that they will not just cut off the ponytails and leave their hair as is; the stylists will give a complete haircut/style.
Once again, any male who would like to shave his head is also invited. Some of the boys wanted designs put into their hair last year, so let them know that all three stylists are capable of doing this.
Space is limited. Interested students should see Ms. Piorkowski to sign up. Kaitlin Kizewski STM 11 has set up a facebook event, so please check there as well. Everyone who participates will be recognized at Relay for Life on May 13, 2011.
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Jennifer Piorkowski at jpiorkowski@tmore.org or 414-481-8370 x 331. |

Fine Arts News
Do you play an instrument or know someone who does?
The STM Music Department is looking for people who would be willing to play for graduation on May 22 at 10:00 am. If you know how to play a band instrument, please help us out by sharing your talent. If you know someone who knows how to play an instrument, please invite that person to play for graduation. Please contact Ms. Wiecki at nwiecki@tmore.org or 414-481-8370 x132 if you are willing to play or know someone who can play.
NAHS and TRI-M Inductions
On Thursday, April 28, select students involved in art and music were inducted into their respective national honor societies. New members inducted into the National Art Honor Society were Sergio Diaz-Delgado and Kathryn Sowinski. Continuing members of the National Art Honor Society are Katelin Ali and Andrea Schulner.
Students newly inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society are Dan Balistreri, Gabriella Hamilton, and Kaitlyn Serketich. Continuing members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society are Melissa Bekkers, Anne Gates, Eva Glisczinski, Isabella Hamilton, Kathryn Jablonowski, Josh Jankowski, Grace Liebenstein, Sam Matthew, and Maya Woodfill. Congratulations to these students!
State Solo and Ensemble
On Saturday, April 30, seven STM students participated in the State Solo and Ensemble Festival at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In order to participate in the WSMA (Wisconsin School Music Association) State Music Festivals, students must first earn a "starred first" rating in Class A (the most difficult music) at a WSMA District Music Festival, hosted by schools for students in grades 6-12. Students can select from a variety of instrumental and vocal solo and ensemble categories for their performances. Over 225 district festivals were held in Wisconsin during the past six months, involving more participants than any other student activity in the state. Of the five STM events that qualified for state, four were awarded the highest rating possible, two of those with a perfect score by the adjudicate! Congratulations to freshman Kaitlyn Serketich for two different events and to seniors Grace Liebenstein and Acee Laird for one event each. A special congratulation goes to Grace, for qualifying for state for all four years!
Spring Concert
On Sunday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. the STM music students will be presenting their final concert of the year in the STM Auditorium. Due to student request, the theme of the music being performed is based on Walt Disney with many different composers represented. Make plans now to attend this concert and show your support and appreciation for the hard work these students have done this year. The concert is FREE, so we hope to see you all there!
Note for parents of students in Band, Chorus, or Strings: This concert is REQUIRED for all students and is necessary for the final exam grade. Unexcused absences will result in an F for the final exam; excused absences require a note from a parent/guardian BEFORE the event and will require additional work to be completed by the student before a final exam grade will be given.
Fine Arts Awards Banquet
This year 140 STM students and their families were invited to attend the annual Fine Arts Awards Banquet which will take place after the concert on May 15 at 5:00pm. At this event, students are recognized for their participation, accomplishments, and achievements during the 2010-2011 school year. We encourage all students and their families who received an invitation to attend this event so that students may be properly recognized for their achievements, and so that all students will feel the support of their peers. If you have any questions, please contact Fine Arts Department Chair, Ms. Nancy Wiecki 414-481-8370 x132 or email nwiecki@tmore.org.
Senior Art Show and Senior Recital
On Thursday, May 12, senior students in art and music will be presenting their senior "performances." The Senior Art Show opening will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the STM Community Room and will remain there for a week. At 7:00 p.m. in the STM Auditorium, senior music students will be presenting a senior recital. Please stop in the community room to look at art work and then stay for the 7:00 p.m. recital. If you are unable to stop in to see the art work that night, please stop in sometime during that week to view the art work. All seniors participating are grateful for the support that they receive from the community and would greatly appreciate your attendance. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Jodi Brzezinski at 414-481-8370 x124 or email jbrzezinski@tmore.org or Ms. Nancy Wiecki at 414-481-8370 x132 or email nwiecki@tmore.org.
The U.S. Department of Education lists the arts as subjects that college-bound middle and junior high school students should take, stating "Many colleges view participation in the arts and music as a valuable experience that broadens students' understanding and appreciation of the world around them. It is also well known and widely recognized that the arts contribute significantly to children's intellectual development." In addition, one or two years of Visual and Performing Arts are recommended for college-bound high school students. - Getting Ready for College Early: A Handbook for Parents of Students in the Middle and Junior High School Years, U.S. Department of Education, 1997
Art and music require the use of both schematic and procedural knowledge, and, therefore, amplify a child's understanding of self and the world. - Jerome Kagan, PH.D., the Daniel and Amy Starch research professor of psychology, emeritus at Harvard University. Taken from a keynote address he gave entitled, "Why the Arts Matter." |
