Bloomsday, 16th June [1904]

BLOOMSDAY is the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyce's novel Ulysses takes place. It is celebrated every year by Joyceans all over the world.

In Dublin, where the novel is set, it is traditional to dress up and go out for the day, visiting the locations of the book and taking part in readings, walks and convivial activities of all sorts which in some way connect with Ulysses, its author and its world.

In Washington DC, look out for the Solas Nua DC Bloomsday Bicycle Ride, supported by the Embassy.  Their bicycle ride starts at 8.30am, and they will be accompanied by volunteers who will have information about Ireland.

A reading of highlights from James Joyce's Ulysses will take place at James Hoban's Irish Restaurant from 7pm to 11pm on Bloomsday. This event is sponsored by the Harvard Club of Washington DC, American Independent Writers, and the Irish Literature Society, with support from the Embassy. It is open to the public and there is no admission charge.

Solas Nua presents

Fiona Hallinan: UNSOLD

Unsold

June 6 - June 26 at Fathom Creative, 1333 14th Street, Washington, DC, 20005.

Gallery Hours: Monday-Friday 9 am - 5 pm or by appointment.

Fiona Hallinan's practice is concerned with society, value, obsolescence and technology. Her practice explores hidden narratives and non-histories of physical places. Her poetic interventions incorporate the initiation of new societal relations, story-telling, writing, archiving, choreography and event organization. Exploring new media applications of the traditional Irish story gatherer or seanchaí, Fiona's work activates relations between studio process, memory, stories and material traces and absences.
