What Olympic Athletes Can Teach Us about Perseverance

Every Olympic athlete is a winner, simply because they made a commitment to the journey. They have trained their minds and bodies, demonstrating a willingness to persist with strong mental conviction and physical endurance. But most of all, they have had to prepare, practice, and persevere.

What perseverance involves is a state of mind, which is a starting point for any activity that requires sustained focus. There is something to be learned from these athletes, a mindset you can develop and use to maintain momentum and reach your goals.

When you face obstacles, challenges, hardships, difficulties, adverse conditions, or even your own self-doubts, how do you persevere? You develop determination by establishing clearly defined goals, developing a plan of action, and supporting your goals and plans with a strong self-belief.

If you are going sustain your motivation and effort while working on your professional development, you are going to need more than hard work. You'll also need a positive outlook about your capabilities. While you may not be able to control external events, optimism will allow you to maintain hope and persist while finding opportunities, answers, solutions, and ultimately, success. Most of all, never give up.

Interview Tip

Can you ever be fully prepared for all interviews? To some degree, the answer is yes. Consider the purpose of an interview - it is an exchange. The potential employer learns more about you, and you learn more about the organization and the position.

On one hand, you can be prepared to talk about your skills, achievements, accomplishments, and what you have learned. You can discuss how your career has evolved and the goals you would like to accomplish as they are related to the job and the company.

On the other hand, determine ahead of time what you would like to know. This could include a typical day, responsibilities, expectations, quotas, and performance goals, along with the company mission, values, and culture.

Another way to prepare is to conduct an emotional intelligence checkup. How do you handle difficult conversations, interactions, and questions? Do you act rationally and carefully process your response, or do you react emotionally. How you respond can have a direct impact on your image and potential employability.

The best way to prepare is to have a resume that truly represents your skills and abilities, one that helps to put your best foot forward and provide you with self-confidence. See how Dr. J can help you: Resume Writing Service
