The Job Search and Your Mindset

Conducting a job search campaign requires a significant commitment of time, along with strong organizational skills and focused energy. It is possible that you are looking for a job because of recent cutbacks, a potential layoff, or a professional desire for change and growth. Regardless of the reason, job searching can be a manageable process if you have developed a plan of controlled action and taken control of your thoughts.

While searching for a job you may find yourself reactively responding to the process by questioning your background, skills, qualifications, and abilities, especially when emails and letters yield no response from prospective employers. This is an ongoing thought process that may result in frustrations and feelings of uncertainty. You have two choices during this time period. You can become consumed by your fears, questions, self-doubts, and concerns, or you can embrace this time as a learning period and find a way to remain productive. This article will discuss techniques and tools you can utilize to maintain a proactive approach to the job search through the development of a positive mindset and a plan to support your progress.

Business Man Happy

Postive Mental Mindset

Our state of mind often determines how well we perform, the outlook we have about our lives, and the progress we make towards meeting our goals. We have a choice to think positive and reaffirming thoughts or we can allow fears, doubts, and concerns to dominate our thoughts.

Each month I'll present tips and techniques in this newsletter to help you maintain a positive state of mind. Dr. J

Tip #1: Your Thoughts Matter

Henry Ford said that "whether you think you can, or your think you can't, you are right."

Here is an excerpt from Napoleon Hill's classic best-selling book Think and Grow Rich:

If you think you are beaten, you are,

If you think you dare not, you don't

If you like to win, but you think you can't,

It is almost certain you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost

For out of the world we find,

Success begins with a person's will -

It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are,

You've got to think high to rise.

You've got to be sure of yourself before

You can ever win a prize.

Life's battles don't always go

To the stronger or faster man

But soon or late the one who wins

Is the one WHO THINKS HE CAN!

Tip #2: Believe You Can

Dan Green wrote a book Finish Strong about people overcoming adversity through
the power of their determination and courage. This message even inspired the New Orleans Saints in 2009 and set the stage for their Super Bowl victory. You can view a three minute video based upon this motivational book: Finish Strong

Meaningful Interactions for the Career Seeker and Adult Educator

What is Communication?
The process of communication involves a two-way exchange, even when it has been initiated by one person with the intention of delivering information. It begins with the sender who is motivated to communicate for a specific reason, whether they want to present information, ask a question, seek knowledge, or have any other type of need. When someone is the recipient of this message they begin interacting with it, processing it, and responding to it in some manner. When the sender and receiver are interacting together because of this communication it facilitates an exchange of ideas, information, knowledge, beliefs, or opinions.
