Security in the iCloud
iCloudBy simplifying technology, Apple products become embedded in the daily lives of users. Their latest operating system, iOS5, continues this theme.

iCloud, part of iOS5, provides users with 5 gigabytes of free data storage in the "cloud" -- and because employees may access organizational networks, work on products remotely or store confidential data on personal mobile devices, your risk goes up.

Consider these pros and cons regarding iCloud:

  • Cost and ease. iCloud offers a free, efficient option to back up data on Apple devices, and more storage is available cheaply. But data in the iCloud is outside your network, and more likely to attract hackers.
  • Multiple devices can synch to the cloud. But because employees can move data seamlessly, potential for data theft or inadvertent disclosure is high.
  • Syncing across multiple devices. iCloud allows the user to sync across multiple devices. But intellectual property could be exposed when linked to the cloud if devices are lost or stolen.

iUsers have more than 140,000 apps, including many for business. Yet a malicious app could access your company network and steal data, delete information and cause other problems.

If you allow employees to use their Apple devices to store data on the iCloud, be sure to educate employees about protecting their log-in credentials, accessing data in public places, and "phishing" e-mails.

While cloud computing on Apple devices can reduce IT costs and increase productivity, they also can result in unexpected cost and vulnerability.

Going Green with Technology

Green technologyMore companies acquiring new technologies or upgrading IT systems are seeking to adopt environment-friendly practices to improve productivity and efficiency, lessen bandwidth load, optimize data center footprint, and lower utility costs.

To start greening your workplace, begin by compiling an inventory of IT assets -- computers, servers, printers, network devices, etc. Determine which ones are not energy-efficient or nearing end-of-life to identify resource hogs and those needing replacement in favor of greener models.

If you've purchased equipment in the last 5 years, check to ensure you are using their energy-efficient firmware settings. Also consider replacing older models with newer ones -- or getting greener devices from other providers. As you consider new purchases, look for EPEAT ratings, gauging how environmentally friendly the devices are. Key to review are power management features.

Today, virtualization and cloud computing improve productivity, efficiency and data access -- often letting you consolidate functions of multiple devices, lowering data network loads, and improving your green profile.

Besides helping our environment, a more eco-friendly workplace offers many bottom line benefits. To learn more, contact
