EDTS Hosts

Economic Experts

EDTS played host to the recent GSA Business Power Hour event, featuring regional economists and business leaders discussing learnings and ramifications of the 2011 Regional Economic Scorecard. Around 150 attendees learned how the region is faring in growth of jobs and per capita income, and how current efforts to advance business conditions may impact economic development efforts for years to come.

The bi-monthly events provide a unique forum for Upstate South Carolina business, political and community leaders to meet and address key issues impacting the region's business community, and EDTS is proud to be a sponsor of this ground-breaking dialogue.

Planning For Emergencies
Disaster preparednessAs we enter peak hurricane season, take time to ensure your organization can protect information systems and business critical services. Here is a simple checklist to keep in mind:

- Check system backups -- Be sure that backups of critical information systems are happening regularly so that, if need be, you have complete and error-free backups

- Store backups offsite -- Consider automated offsite backups scheduled for convenience, reliability, and easy restoration

- Secure IS media -- Create duplicate copies of applications with registration keys and store them securely offsite

- Check UPS batteries -- UPS devices need functioning batteries that hold enough charge to allow for servers and network equipment to properly shut down in the event of a power loss

- Update warranties -- systems can be damaged by power fluctuations, so take the time to ensure that warranties are updated

- Evaluate insurance coverage -- Be sure your policy covers current costs of repairing or replacing damaged electronics, data recovery and restoration

- Modify phone services -- Consider a VoIP service provider to allow for transferring phone service from one location to another

- Update key vendor contact information

- Educate staff -- Train your business's employees so they know what to do in the event of a natural disaster.

Should You Be Moving to the Cloud?

Cloud computingInterest in Cloud computing has exploded, particularly among web-savvy businesses and early adopters that need to access information on the move, or outside working hours.

The workplace has changed dramatically -- for many, it's no longer a desk at a specific location, it's wherever they happen to be. Cloud services provide anywhere, anytime access to your information; if third parties need secure access to view information, the Cloud offers that flexibility as well.

Top Cloud service providers take great measures to ensure that data is secure so that only authorized users can access, with growing economies of scale meaning far greater levels of security than many businesses could implement on their own.

If cash is at a premium, Cloud monthly pricing models are well suited to businesses who want to spread costs and manage cashflow, and the ability to be up and running in minutes offers potentially significant savings. Subscribers to Cloud-based services also have guaranteed access to the most up to date version of the product(s) they are using for as long as they want or need -- typically delivered overnight and at no cost.

Before committing, understand what support is available - so that if something goes wrong, or you have question, there is someone there to help you if you need them.

Caring for Kids, Families an EDTS Focus

Civic involvementContinuing a tradition of supporting children's and family causes, EDTS recently sponsored two events geared to improving the lives of children and their families.

EDTS was a proud sponsor of the Columbia County (GA) Exchange Club's Concert for Kids at Augusta's Imperial Theater, with all proceeds from the event benefitting area child abuse prevention and child enrichment programs. Exchange is an all-volunteer, national service organization for men and women, and develops and implements programs which seek to eliminate child abuse and strengthen families.

In addition, EDTS sponsored Safe Homes of Augusta's "Take Aim at Domestic Violence" trap shooting tournament, dinner and raffle at Pinetucky Gun Club, with all proceeds from the event going to the Safe Homes domestic violence intervention programs.

In both instances, a great time was had by all attendees and, most importantly, two very worthy community organizations, and their missions to improve life for kids and families, benefitted.
