NEWSLETTER                                                       May 2011

Dear Friends of Family Crisis Center,

Over the next few months we will be spotlighting different components of our agency.  This month, we are highlighting our 52 Week Offender Program and one of our amazing staff members that works with our clients in this program.  It takes the entire community for us to be able to spread the word about our services and programs, so please share this information with those in need.  Wishing you all a happy and safe Memorial Day.

Sincerely,
Family Crisis Center, Inc.

52 Week Offender Program

Family Crisis Center is an approved provider of Domestic Violence Offender Treatment Intervention (DVOTI) by The New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department. The program is aimed at providing the skills, knowledge and tools necessary to address abusive behaviors in relationships and work toward cooperative, healthy relationships. Clients in the program are either court ordered due to a conviction of battery or aggravated battery against a household member or self-referred because of concerns an individual has about their behaviors in their relationship. The program staff have a cummilative work experience in the field of domestic violence treatment that exceeds 170 years.

Getting Started

After an individual reaches out to our agency for help, whether referred by the courts or voluntarily, they go through a process of assessment, diagnosis, and placement in various groups. As mentioned later in this newsletter, the staff also determines if there are other treatment needs for the client, (i.e. substance abuse or mental health issues).

Domestic Violence
Education Groups
28 Weeks

The Domest Violence Education Group focus is on understanding the dynamics of abuse, the basis of power and control as it relates to domestic violence, the effect of domestic violence on the victim and the children, and healthy relationships.  The series of topics allows the participant to learn the effects of their actions, challenges their understanding of power and control in relationships, and provides them with coping skills in order to be in cooperative relationships.

Behavior Management
12 Weeks

These classes are designed to educate the participant on issues related to their behavior and anger.  Although anger management is not the cause of domestic violence, it is essential to help clients understand and develop skills related to feelings and coping with feelings.  These classes are typically held in the evenings to accomodate clients who work during the day.

Communication Groups
12 Weeks

The follow-up to the Behavior Management Group is the 12 week Communication Class. This group helps the participant pull all of the knowledge and skills they have learned in the program and work towrad practical application of the concepts in their lives.  This class is designed to equip participants with the tools and skills necessary to have effective communication in their relationships. The class examines respectful ways to communicate and handle conflict and focuses on providing an understaning of assertion versus aggression in communication.

Substance Abuse Recovery & Mental Health Services

Often times a person who is undergoing treatment in the program may be identified as having other issues that need examination, such as mental health or substance abuse issues.  Family Crisis Center provides innovative, skilled intervention for the treatment of Dual Diagnoses. Dual Diagnosis is the co-occurrence of Mental Health and Chemical Dependence.

Master Domestic Violence Specialist

Karen Harris

Well, I started my 21st year with Family Crisis Center this last February. Marge Atkinson, Family Crisis Center's founder, was the one that hired me.  I have facilitated men's and women's education groups since I started and and have worked in collaboration with district court for the last 16 years. To me, success has been achieved in my groups when the participants do not return to Family Crisis Center.  People I work with in this field know that I will not approach a person I know from group; I have been in this town a long time and people know what I do. When ex-clients see me and they come right up to me and tell me how well they are doing, even in public, I feel that I have taught them new ways to work on things and those tools are helping them.  That positive response from former clients keeps you doing what you are doing. Besides working with Family Crisis Center, I am a mother of 5, grandmother of 9, great-grandmother of eleven, not including spouses. I have sang with my son in Barber Shop for the last four years. I have been a farmer, school bus driver, an agent for Aspen Airways, worked with cattle and rode for many years. My life has been a fun trip and it just gets better.
