Marge's Place Grand Opening
Marge Atkinson's Children Speak at the Gathering | Home-away-from-home for hurting families opens its doors.
After 6 years of planning and fundraising, it was a special moment for our community and all invovled to celebrate the Grand Opening of Marge's Place protective shelter on June 26, 2010. The new. state-of-the art facility will be able to accommodate many more families, more comfortably than the existing shelter facilities. This facility represents safety, hope and healing for hurting families. One of the most amazing things about the shelter is that hurting families will know that the community cares for them; that they are not forgotten or pushed aside. An overwhelming number of community members, organizations and businesses stepped forward to help Marge's Place become a reality. It is the true giving spirit of San Juan County that built the shelter. It is as if every community member helped lay a brick to ensure this safe home was a reality. |
Special Thanks to our Donors!
It is amazing to us the ways in which our community has stepped forward to help ensure that Marge's Place became a reality. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all who contributed.

From Humble Beginnings...
In early 1978 Marge Atkinson and a few other women started to take victims of domestic violence into their own homes to help them and try to keep them safe. They soon found out that they were now included in the crisis. During the next few years, Marge Atkinson founded Marge Atkinson Home for Women and Children, which became state funded and started the first protective shelter. The non-profit organization has helped to pioneer a model for empowering families of domestic violence to take control of their lives. The center was started by a group of volunteers, and a modicum of information they obtained at a workshop in Wichita Kansas. The intention was to provide safety to women. The first shelter was very small; it was a one bedroom apartment with three beds, a living room, dining room, kitchen, and a bathroom. The apartment had wall-to-wall bodies; wherever they could find space. It is with great honor and pleasure that Family Crisis Center has named the new shelter after our founder, Marge, who knew that no one should have to live with abuse alone. l them how valuable they are to you, but don't go overboard. Insincerity is easy to spot.

Domestic violence rates in San Juan County are triple the national average.
Domestic violence is everyone's business. It could be happening in families that you know. Unfortunately, domestic violence has no boundaries. It affects people of all socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities, ages, and educaitonal backgrounds.
