Louisiana Children's Discovery Center
Schedule your hours with the LCDC!

As you are aware, Ms. Janis Vicknair and I have met to form a partnership to allow you to earn your field experience hours here at the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center, if you would like to.  We are very excited to be able to work together while "Helping families discover a new way to play"!

It's time to schedule your field experience with the
Louisiana Children's Discovery Center!

Below there is a link to Volunteer Spot which will allow you to look at our calendar for this coming weekend and then the entire month of October.  I invite you to click on this link and select the specific time and area of the LCDC where you would like to work.  The areas are listed below with an explanation to help you decide which area you feel you would prefer.

Please DO NOT hesitate to contact me to discuss any of these areas.  The deadline to select your schedule is this Friday, September 24 at NOON.  If you are unable to select your schedule by then, please contact me via email or by phone at 985-340-9150.   I understand that some of you may only need 5 hours while some may need up to 50. We are HAPPY for you to earn as many hours as you need here at the children's discovery center which is why I'm offering you this opportunity to schedule your own hours.

The stations (exhibit areas) are:
  • Toddler/Creation Station - The toddler area has a few exhibits, play activities geared towards our little friends from crawling age through approximately 2 years. The Creation Station is where you will spend most of your time, assisting with, teaching and monitoring arts and crafts activities as well as clean-up.
  • Agriculture Station - This area has our shrimp boat (The Discovery), waterfront, milking cow, Middendorf's Cafe', "Operation" Game, Pet Vet & Ambulance. Each of these will require hands-on supervision, play guidance and putting away/organizing props for these areas (for instance the fish from the shrimp boat will need to be put back in place periodically).
  • Construction Station - This area has our crane, rock-crawling wall, house under construction, hot air balloon ride.  Candidates in this exhibit area will be hands-on, guiding play, asking questions, encouraging children in how to use the exhibits and clean-up.
  • Music/Theater Station - This station has 2 musical exhibits as well as a miniature Columbia Theater with a back-stage area. Candidates will assist children in acting out their imagined "skit" or "play" while also keeping the area clean and organized.  Encouragement to play the musical instruments as well as inspiring the children to use the costumes in the theater area to act.
  • Bubble Station - There are 5 different bubble exhibits in this area. Candidates will help keep the station clean and safe as well as ensuring children are playing safely and correctly with the bubble exhibits.
  • Front Desk/Gear Clock/Gift Shop - This area is most likely not the best fit for Teacher Ed Candidates; however, you will have a chance to work with children and observe family interaction. Opportunities for that include greeting children/families, offering "orientation" to school groups/field trips, explaining/teaching about gears, levers, pulleys from our Donor Gear Clock and assisting children with gift shop purchases (good opportunity for working on math skills and decision making).
  • Floater - The floater is a person who will basically work in a variety of areas throughout the LCDC. If someone in one of the other stations needed to take a break then the floater would take that persons place momentarily and so on.
