Louisiana Children's Discovery Center
Dear students,
I booked our field trip to the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center today!
                                  Love,
                                  Your favorite teacher!

Greetings!

I have been receiving phone calls nearly every day about our field trips at the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center. Thank you for your interest in us!  We are thrilled to say that we had a 53' tractor trailer in front of our building on Tuesday unloading some exciting exhibits for the LCDC.  Installation has begun and we are preparing for you, your students & chaperones to come discover a new way to play & learn!

Discovery Field Trips!

I am happy to say that included in this email, by clicking here, you can download and print the LCDC Educational Programs Guide to an amazing field trip!  In this guide you will find:
  • A listing of exhibits
  • Discovery Center guidelines
  • Info on pricing and student:teacher ratios
  • Kid-friendly map of downtown Hammond
  • Directions to the center
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Reservation Form
Field TripIf you are ready to book your field trip, please download and print your guide.  Once you have completed your reservation form please send it, along with your deposit, to the LCDC in the manner most convenient for you whether that is via mail, fax, email or dropping off.

Here are a few "Pre-Trip Tips" for you to get your students ready for the trip:
  1. Review the LCDC guidelines.
  2. Visit our website and show them the images of the exhibits
  3. Print the kid-friendly map of Downtown Hammond and use the map to discuss all of the wonderful places in Downtown Hammond.  Ask them if they have been to any of these places.  Discuss the compass rose & use the streets to teach them about parallel & perpendicular lines.  Use this as a time to teach safety concerns such as how to cross the street.
  4. Print out the Scavenger Hunt and have your students read and discuss with a partner.  Have them try to guess the answers using the exhibits on our website.  Allow students to work with a partner or team to complete the Scavenger Hunt at the LCDC.  Be sure to remind them to tear off the bottom portion and drop it into our Discovery Box for a chance to win a prize!
  5. Accessing prior knowledge: "Have you ever visited a children's discovery center/museum before?", "What do you remember about it"?, "Have you heard about the LCDC in Hammond?", "After looking at the exhibits on the website, which ones are you most excited about?"
  6. Allow students to write the answers to your "prior knowledge" questions in their journal.  If desired, allow students to free-write about what they envision happening on the day of their field trip.  Ask them about the best field trip they've ever taken before and why it was the best.
We look forward to helping you on your trip to discovery!
If you have any questions please contact me! I look forward to speaking with you and answering any questions you might have!
