Apply for NACo County Courthouse Awards Today!
Each year the National Association of Counties recognizes county leaders across the nation for their innovative leadership and efforts to improve quality of life in their communities with the NACo Courthouse Awards.  Courthouse Awards are available in three categories: Rural, Suburban, and Urban.

All AACo members are eligible to apply, and strongly encouraged to do so.  Award winners receive an engraved, hand-crafted plaque, recognition at the NACo Annual Conference, and a $5,000 college scholarship to present to a graduating high school senior in their community.

Applications for County Courthouse Awards must be submitted by April 27, 2012 and can be completed online.

AACo staff are standing by; contact Jeff Curwen to help you with your applications.
"Health Counties, Healthy Families" is NCGM Focus
April is National County Government Month (NCGM), and this year's theme is "Healthy Counties, Healthy Families."  All Arizona counties are encouraged to share how the event is being observed in your communities.  So far, events are planned in Apache, Yavapai and Maricopa Counties;  of course, they're not alone, so email Jeff Curwen to let AACo know what your county is doing to promote county government, good public health and saefty.

AACo has a month-long plan to promote healthy counties and healthy families in Arizona, and it involves each and every county.  Be sure to check our Twitter feed each day and watch our videos regularly.  We'll be promoting county-planned events and providing tips and facts for AACo members to use in educating their residents about health.

Why should you participate?  Well, AACo members who promote NCGM can apply for recognition from NACo.  Six winners will be selected from across the nation -- two each from rural, suburban and metropolitan counties.  First place winners will get two free NACo Conference registrations (a value of more than $1,000).  Second place winners will get one free registration.  Get more information about NCGM, use the hashtag #NCGM when Tweeting about it, and follow AACo for support in promoting this topic in your county!
Maricopa County Needs Help with POD Exercise

Each year, the Maricopa County Public Health Department performs a crisis response exercise in order to maintain its readiness for chemical and bilogical attacks.  On April 14, the county will hold a Point of Dispensing (POD) Drive-Through Exercise in Phoenix and needs volunteers.

The exercise will simulate the rapid dispensation of critical medications to county residents in the event of a bilogical attack; but volunteers are desperately needed!  The county needs 300 volunteers -- either county employees or residents -- from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Volunteers will need to drive their own vehicles through the POD checkpoints from 10 a.m. until noon.

Lunch will be provided and volunteers will receive a gas gift card.  No training is necessary; orientation and debriefing will occur on-site.

To volunteer, email Tricia Wadleigh, or call (602) 372-2692.  The registration deadline is April 4, so sign up now!

Tom Manos Appointed Maricopa County Manager
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors
this week appointed Tom Manos as the next county manager.

Manos is a veteran Maricopa County employee, having served in various leadership roles over a 25-year period.  As Chief Financial Officer, Manos oversaw four of the county's rating upgrades, resulting in its current AAA-rating from Standard and Poor's and Fitch Ratings.

In 2009 he joined Governor Jan Brewer's transition staff, and stayed on as her Deputy Chief of Staff for Finance and Budget for two budget cycles.  Additionally, he is actively involved with the United Way, working to end chronic homelessness in Maricopa County, as well as with several other community service and develop groups.

Manos will succeed long-time county manager David Smith, who is retiring on April 27.
