Arizona Marks its Centennial; Celebrations Continue

Arizona celebrated its 100th birthday this week in a series of grand events all over the state.  And though the big day has passed, many more official and unofficial heritage events are planned throughout the year in nearly every community.

The past week has seen a centennial event for just about every taste and inclination.  From extravagant galas, museum exhibitions and mass marriage ceremonies to concerts, lecture series, dancing, motorcyle tours and the unveiling of the U.S. Postal Service's Arizona Centennial Forever stamp, the Capitol has been awash in state pride.

Many counties held special events or had projects named as official Legacy Projects.  Among the Legacy Projects, was Pinal County's 1891 Courthouse Renovation and the Verde Valley Historic Photographs collection compiled by the Yavapai County Attorney's Office.  In Pima County last week, at the Joel D. Valdez Library, a historical photo exhibit was unveiled, while Yuma County hosted a fandango (dance party) on Main Street, complete with a barbeque and fireworks.  And Coconino County hosted events all day on Tuesday, such as historical exhibits, lectures, tree dedications, courthouse tours and more.

If you missed the events, there are sure to be more planned in the coming weeks and months somewhere near you.  Check the Centennial Calendar for more details.

AACo 3rd VP Appointed to APAAC Exec. Committee
AACo's 3rd Vice President and Navajo County Attorney, Brad Carlyon, was recently appointed to the Executive Committee of the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys Advisory Council (APAAC).

APAAC was created in 1977 by the Arizona Legislature to coordinate and provide educational opportunities for Arizona prosecutors.  APPAC currently serve over 800 full-time state, county, and municipal prosecutors.  County Attorney Carlyon now serves as one of five Council members who provides guidance to the APAAC executive director on management of the Council.

He replaces Yavapai County Attorney Sheila Polk as Personnel Committee Chair, who was elevated to Chair APAAC late last year.
AACo Announces Credentialed Education Program
AACo Logo
Over the past year, AACo has been planning a new continuing education program designed to offer participants a credential, distinguishing them as experienced, knowledgeable county leaders.  The Association is now moving onto the development stage, with the intention of having the program implemented and enrolling participants by November of 2012.

As part of this new credentialed education program, AACo is calling on members from every affiliate group and each county to contribute to the development of program policies, procedures, and curriculum.  Those who are interested in joining this committee are encouraged to contact AACo's Executive Director Nicole Stickler.
Rep. Miranda Resigns from House

Rep. Richard Miranda submitted his resignation yesterday morning, effective Feb. 20.  Miranda cited "health reasons and family issue" in his letter to Speaker Andy Tobin.

Miranda had been expected to run for the Senate in the new LD19 this year.

Ordinarily, the process of replacing a vacated legislative seat involves the precinct committeemen in the affedted legislative district and for the vacating party to nominate three potential replacements, which the Board of Supervisors of that county will select from.  In this instance, Rep. Miranda's district does not have the necessary number committeemen to follow this process.  Instead, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will appoint a committee, which in turn will make the nominations for the Board to select from.

NACo Webinar to Focus on Inmate Healthcare Coverage
NACo is offering a webinar Thursday, Feb. 23 at noon.  The topic will be Health Coverage for Your County Jail's Pretrial Population.  Through the Affordable Care Act many uninsured, low-income individuals -- including those in the criminal justice system -- will become eligible for Medicaid and subsidized private health plans in 2014.  Attendees will learn about opportunities for those individuals to gain coverage, issues counties may face enrolling detainees into these plans, and the potential fiscal relief this could provide for counties.

Sarah Somers, Managing Attorney for the National Health Law Program, Meg Sheldon, Information Technology Associate for the County Welfare Directos Association of California, and Patrick Fleming, Director of the Salt Lake County Substance Abuse Division of Behavioral Health Services for Salt Lake County, Utah will be the presenters.
