State Budget Update

Governor Jan Brewer last Friday released her Executive Budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2013.  Of particular interest was the section on the prisoner shift issue fronting the 2012 County Government Platform.

The governor's proposal recognizes the many unresolved questions and concerns raised by the language of the law set to go into effect July 1.  Specifically noting the concerns surrounding programming, protection, sentencing computation, community supervision, and work release issues, Gov. Brewer has recommended repealing the inmate shift law before it takes effect. AACo President Dodie Doolittle said "the governor sees the importance of this issue to the counties, and we thank her for taking the position that she has."

In order to ensure a unified message, members are encouraged to utilize this set of talking points when dicussing the effect of the inmate shift with public and state officials.

AACo will have a full analysis of the Executive Budget in next week's edition of Capitol Notes.

AACo's officers were invited to participate in a conference call led by President Barack Obama Friday.  The call was scheduled in anticipation of next week's State of the Union address.  Local, state, and tribal leaders from across the United States were invited to discuss stories from their communities that could contribute to the overall theme of the president's address, which will focus on rebuilding the economy based on fair play, a fair shot, and a fair share.
