Client Spotlight
Sandy & Rich Feldbusch
The Feldbuschs had lived in their house for almost 20 years with very few major improvements made during that time. When they decided it was time to update their master bathroom, they trusted us to make it worth the wait.

Together we transformed the old bathroom into a beautiful haven of relaxation. Starting with, of course, a beautifully updated shower, complete with a frameless glass enclosure. Next was the soaking tub in which to relax while taking in the view of their backyard paradise. Lastly, his & hers vanity cabinets allowed for a much needed increase in storage.

The gorgeous granite used on the countertops and as an accent in the shower played perfectly with the crackled glass accent tile in both the tub and shower areas, as well as the backsplash. All of these materials, along with the rich new cabinets, provide a truly updated look. In the end, they were very pleased with the results, and now Sandy can lay back & enjoy her glass of wine!

Sometimes things happen that put all your troubles in perspective. April 1999 was one of those times for me....

Even though '99 sales would wind up doubling '98, we were continuing to get deeper & deeper in debt. I wanted to just keep driving by the office sometimes, but I knew I couldn't because I had a responsibility to the people who worked for us, my customers and my family.

One Saturday, following a gut feeling, I called a doctor to set up an appointment. Since I hadn't received a call back, I tried again on Monday. At first they said ten days wait, but a little voice told me to ask to talk to a nurse. I asked her a question and, after briefly consulting with a doctor, she asked me if I could be to the office in 10 minutes. My heart dropped.

I didn't tell anybody, I just went to the appointment. After a 3 minute exam the doctor said, "Come back to my office, let's talk." Doctor on one side and you on the other, like in the movies. He said, "I'm 99% sure you have cancer, but we're going to do an ultra-sound to make sure."

I went back to work all jacked up, but working helped keep me kind of sane. I still hadn't not told a soul. I wanted to tell my Dad, but I had a hard time trying to talk about it without breaking down, so I didn't.

They did the ultra-sound and that afternoon I got a call from the doctor and he told me just what I didn't want to hear: "It is a tumor, I'd like to sit down with you & your wife tomorrow to discuss your options." So, Tuesday morning he told me that he could do a biopsy, but would prefer to remove the whole tumor to be safe and then do the biopsy afterward.

I set up an appointment to have the surgery on Thursday. I actually went to work the next day like normal and the morning of the surgery. It only took a couple hours. The doctor called me on Friday at 1:00 and said "Bad news is it is cancer, but the good news is that it's seminoma, the best kind to have (if there is such a thing)."

I rested on the weekend and went to work full steam ahead on Monday like nothing ever happened. I didn't tell one customer about any of it.

This was the hardest time in my life, but I knew that it's always darkest before the dawn and the only thing I could do was persevere, persevere, persevere...
Showered in Luxury
Today's bathroom is undergoing a change: from water-closet to home spa - and the transformation often begins with the shower stall.  Here are some tips to creating a spa-like bathroom:

The trick to creating a spa-like bathroom is to open up the lines of sight says Sean Ruck, a spokesman for the National Kitchen & Bath Association in Hackettstown, N.J. "What it means for showers is glass enclosures. Taking that to the next level, you have seamless construction."

The inside of the shower is changing, too. Showerheads, for example, have become increasingly sophisticated and technical. Single-function showerheads are still popular, especially in larger sizes that create a rain effect. You can also find multi-function showerheads that offer a variety of sprays, including massage and mist settings.

Showerhead design isn't the only thing evolving - location is, too. Instead of a showerhead poking out of the wall at an angle above the tub, many are now being installed right in the ceiling. This is especially effective with rain showerheads, giving the user the feeling that they're being drenched by a spring shower.

If you enjoy therapeutic massage, consider a spa system with built-in body jets to soothe aching muscles.  Equally therapeutic are steam showers. Upgrade your existing bath with a steam panel or opt for a built-in steam room.

Increasingly, showers are being built with the environment in mind, meaning extra showerheads need not translate into wasted water (not to mention a daunting water bill). Newer showerheads tend to use a lot less water than older ones. You can easily find out the gallons-per-minute, or cycles-per-minute, before you buy them.

Lastly, on a safety note, in order to keep the shower floor from getting slick, use textured tiles. Any size will work, but the smaller they are, the better grab they will have. Small stone mosaic tiles like limestone or travertine add texture as well as durability; this helps make the bathroom both safe, and beautiful!
