Patient Spotlight

Keith Jensen,
At his Novato home in front of one of his many paintings.
Born Under a Lucky Star
It's not often that you get a second chance at life--especially when you're 86. But that's exactly what Keith Jensen got last October. After suffering from back pain for several days, he went to his doctors' office to have it checked out. He was sent directly to the emergency room at Marin General Hospital -- and not a moment to soon. Keith was told he needed immediate surgery for a ruptured aortic aneurysm. When he asked if he could come back for surgery the next day, he was told he may not make it through the night. Within hours, Keith was on the operating table. His wife Jeanne was told he had only a 10% chance of survival. Defying the odds, Keith survived the surgery and spent 8 days in the hospital. He was then transferred to a rehab facility where he spent several weeks recovering. When he came to SSTM for physical therapy, his legs were so weak he could barely walk. According to Keith, SSTM was 'miraculous' and helped him regain his strength again. "I can't say enough about them", he says. "Every member of the organization was attentive and involved. They were serious, but with lots of humor. Nick, my physical therapist, was wonderful. They all became like my second family and now that I'm all done with my treatments, I really miss the place." "Keith was great", says Nick Keitzer, "and he worked very hard. He was inspirational AND extremely lucky. We miss having him around!"
Although it's only been 3 months since his surgery, Keith is doing well. He's completely mobile, feeling good and is back to painting, his favorite pastime. "I guess I was just born under a lucky star", says Keith.

Texters Beware!
Too Much Texting Linked to Neck and Shoulder Pain
Preliminary research on college students in the US suggests that too much texting can lead to neck and shoulder pain, similar to that found in older adults who develop injuries from prolonged and repeated use of computers.
Judith Gold, ergonomics researcher at Temple University in Philadelphia, presented the preliminary findings of her study at this year's annual meeting of the American Public Health Association. Gold, who directs the Ergonomics and Work Physiology Laboratory, told the press that texting is probably doing for this generation of young adults what years in front of a computer did for older adults: it is putting them at risk of serious injury. "What we've seen so far is very similar to what we see with office workers who've spent most of their time at a computer," said Gold. Current studies of people who sit for long periods at computers, such as office workers, show they are prone to carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, and tendonitis.

PT Tips
For millions of Americans, handheld electronic devices -- also called PDAs -- are a source of convenience and efficiency. But, if used improperly, they can also be a source of pain and injury. (See PT News above.) To make sure your PDA gives you a helping hand and not a hurting one, consider the following:
- Take frequent breaks from your PDA. It's harmful to type for more than a few minutes at a time.
- Write fewer and shorter messages; learn to abbreviate your responses.
- Try to avoid thumb-typing; use your other fingers to type.
- If possible, place a support in your lap so your wrists are in a more upright position and not flexed or bent.
