Meet the "Roving" Base Rep, Shelly Bearden!

Shelly Bearden
CMVE "Roving" Base Rep, Shelly Bearden

Shelly Bearden has been providing enrollment and counseling services to military and their families all over Hampton Roads since the beginning of this year. Read on to find out more about where she's been and what she does.

What did you do before you came to TCC and what is your experience with the military?
I worked as a Facilitator for PLATO Learning, an educational software learning company. For over 15 years they had a contract with the Navy. This contract allowed for active duty, dependents and retirees to utilize the software to prep for the ASVAB
, SAT, ACT, Praxis, GED, CLEPs, etc. for FREE. The NCLC held 2 week prep classes, where members were given orders to attend to prepare for their exams, in an educational friendly environment. I worked for the The Navy College Learning Center from 1998-2001 at Roosevelt Roads, PR, and at NSN Norfolk, from 2002-2010. I also was a military wife for 17 years

What do you like about the job so far?
As the Roving Base Rep for the CMVE I am enjoying the outreach that I get to do for the CMVE, going to Yellow Ribbon Events for the National Guard, outreach to Coast Guard Bases, DAV Ch 4, along with the NW Annex, and many other places that the CMVE may want me to do outreach with the Military Community. We are taking TCC
to Service Members who may not have time to visit college campuses, due to their work schedules or location of their bases, as not all bases have a college office onboard their installations. I enjoy working with the military, because they have to sacrifice so much in their lives due to their commitment and dedication to our country. I like to be one of the people that they interact with knowing that I will go over and beyond to extend great customer service.

What is the primary thing you hope to help students achieve when they walk into the office? What kind of services can students expect when they meet with you?
To provide top notch customer service, hoping to get them on the path towards their goals.
As the Roving Base Rep, I can provide the same services that a Service Member can get at a base office or the CMVE: Academic counseling and Registration, field questions for basic information and many other types of requests that may come in.

What bases or locations are you covering as the "roving base rep"?
My main location is at Naval Station Norfolk, but also I am responsible to fill in at the other base offices: Portsmouth, Little Creek and Oceana as needed. I also go to commands upon request such as NW Annex Coast Guard Station and Navy Brig, TAP (Transition Assistance Program), Common Wealth Challenge Program. I attend National Guard "Yellow Ribbon" Events. Pretty much, if there is a need at a command or base, I will be sent out. My scheduled visits are Portsmouth Coast Guard office the first Wednesday of each month and DAV (Disabled Vets), ch 4, the 2nd & 4th Thursday each month.

What is the best way for students to get in contact with you and should they set up an appointment with you or just visit you during office hours?
Email is the best way to reach me, as there are days that I am not at the NSN office. Students are welcome to come to the NSN office without an appointment, if I am not in there are 2 other advisors in the office.

You can reach Mrs. Bearden at 757-822-1682 or at MBearden@tcc.edu

New Process to Request Transcripts

TCC has contracted with Docufide by Parchment, a company that specializes in transcript processing in order to deliver student transcripts in a more efficient and timely manner.

Effective immediately, students will be able to request a paper or electronic copy of their official transcript directly from Docufide by Parchment at a cost of $3.00 (electronic) or $5.00 (paper). Overnight delivery will also be an option for most students who have an emergency. The fee for overnight delivery service will be determined by Docufide by Parchment based on delivery location.
The costs of the first two copies requested by each current and former student will be paid for by the college. Students may also make a request of their official transcript in paper form in person at any campus Enrollment Services office for a $5.00 fee made payable at the campus Business office. Note that it may take the campus Enrollment Services office up to two business days to process requests of this nature. Therefore, for convenience and expedience, students in need of an official transcript can request their transcript through the web at http://www.tcc.edu/students/admissions/transcripts/.
