Greetings TCC Student!
The Spring 2011 Semester is underway, but if you weren't able to get into classes in January, don't worry - the 2nd 8 week session will be starting in March and there's still plenty of time to get into one of those classes. Check out the important dates section below to find out when you have to be registered and when classes begin. In this issue, you will also find a spotlight on Mrs. Pamela Martin, the Base Representative at Naval Air Station Oceana. If you're stationed at Oceana or Dam Neck, Mrs. Martin is the person to see to help you with all your counseling and enrollment needs. We have also highlighted some of the major changes in the new Post 9-11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvements Act. Make sure you read that story and follow the link to the official Veterans Affairs website to find out all the details. We hope your Spring Semester is going well so far, and don't forget that if you need assistance with classes, enrollment, or counseling, a Base Representative is there to help. Check out the left hand sidebar for information on all our Base Reps' locations and hours.

Spotlight on . . .
Mrs. Pamela Martin
Base Representative, Naval Air Station Oceana
How long have you worked for TCC?
9 years this spring.
How long have you been the base rep at Oceana and what other jobs have you had at TCC?
I have been the base rep at Oceana for almost 4 years. When I started working for TCC in 2002, I was an instructor for the Jobs Skills Training Program at the Norfolk Campus. Along with teaching classes, I also became the case manager for the Certified Nursing Assistant program at JSTP.
As a Base Representative what do you do on a daily basis and what kind of services can you offer TCC students?
I work with active duty students, their family members, retirees, and civilians working on the base. I feel like a "Jill of all trades" as I assist in the application process, do placement testing, advise students regarding appropriate curriculum and courses to take, unofficially evaluate transcripts, facilitate the domicile process and overall provide academic advice and encouragement. In addition, I work with the deans' offices on campus regarding class schedules, make sure civilian students and instructors have access to the base to attend them, and oversee the smooth running of the class.
What kind of programs does TCC offer at Oceana?
We offer eight-week general education courses such as English, history, psychology, and philosophy. Given our proximity to the Virginia Beach campus, we have a lesser need to hold as many classes as other bases that are more remote from TCC campuses.
What do you like best about your job as Base Representative?
As a long time military spouse and having previously worked many years at the air station at Fleet & Family Support and the Navy College Learning Center, I do understand the challenges of the military life style and the part education plays in it. It's nice to be able to use that insight and experience to provide helpful information to active duty members and their families. I feel I can offer the extra time and guidance to help them make informed decisions regarding the appropriate path to take to meet their educational goals, either while in the military or after they have separated. It's very rewarding to see their progress and success. |
Recent Changes in the Post 9-11 GI Bill
Find out how the recent changes to the GI Bill affect you and your family.
President Obama recently signed the Post 9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvement Act (GI Bill 2.0) into law. What does this mean for you? Lots of small changes have a big impact on the way the bill works.
The top five changes that will impact active duty service members:
- Active duty service members, and spouses to whom they have transferred benefits, will now be eligible for the $1000 per year annual book stipend. (Paid at a rate of $41 per credit hour.) (Effective 10/1/2011)
- Funds may be used for a wide range of educational options, including graduate work, apprenticeships, certificates, licenses, and vocational and technical training. (Effective 10/1/2011)
- Funds may be used for placement exams such as the GRE, LSAT, MCAT, ACT and SAT. (Effective 8/1/2011)
- Funds may be used for multiple licensing and certification tests. (Effective 8/1/2011)
- NOAA and PHS forces will now be eligible to transfer their benefits. (Effective 8/1/2011)
