2011-2012 REGISTRATION

reg

We want to thank all of our parents who have registered their children for the upcoming academic year 2011-2012.  We are extremely excited for all the new and exciting things to come.

Just as a reminder, if you have not submitted all of the proper forms to our office yet, please make sure to do so ASAP  Someone might have contacted you from the office or told you during the time of registration about missing paperwork or information.  If that is the case, please make sure to hand in the pending materials within the next week.  Mainly, Kindergarten students need to hand in their immunization cards and the 7th-12th graders need to show proof of their vaccination of Tdap.  These are required by law and essential before they can start school on August 22, 2011.

For those parents who still have not registered, please be advised that certain grade levels are filling up fast.  If you want to ensure a place for your child, please register soon before we are unable to accept more applicants for that grade level.  Thank You!

Book Buy Back:

Once again, Budget Text/Study Source will visit our school to buy back books from students for the next year.  The dates and times will be as follows:

High School: June 17, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Elementary and Middle School:  June 20 & 21 from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Please be advised that a lot of the books will be changing next year for all the grades.  We advise you to not buy and sell books from students.  You may very well end up buying books that will not be used in our school anymore.  Therefore, please only sell back your books to Budget Text/Study Source during the above mentioned dates.  Even if the books will not be used in the upcoming year, Budget Text/Study Source may still purchase the books from you for sale to other schools.

Also, please note when the time comes to buy books for next year, we advise that you purchase your books from Budget Text/Study Source directly.  They will have the correct editions/versions/publications.  A lot of times, when purchasing from outside sources like amazon.com, you end up buying an older edition or a different version of the book.  Sometimes the ISBN numbers are not correct either on other sites.  The only way to ensure you get the correct version of the required books is to purchase them through Budget Text/Study Source.

You will soon be receiving your username and password for Budget Text/Study Source in time to purchase your books for the next year.

2010-2011 Yearbooks

The Pilibos Yearbook Committee, comprised of a group of 2011 seniors, is well underway in its efforts to design and complete our 2010-2011 Yearbook.  They are working diligently to create a unique, fun, and memorable yearbook that may be enjoyed for years to come.

In an effort to increase revenue to help our school create an amazing yearbook, this year the committee is including Recognition Ads and Business Advertisements.

Yearbook Recognition Ads are a great way for parents and loved ones to commemorate student achievements and important milestones.  School clubs, organizations, and/or classes can also benefit from these Ads.  They can display their personality, voice, and mark within our school by creating a page that is unique to their club or group.

Businesses can also participate by buying Ad Space for their business cards and/or advertisements.

Your participation would be of great value and appreciated by the Yearbook Committee and our school.  IN ADDITION TO SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL, YOUR DONATION IS ALSO A GREAT WAY TO RECEIVE A TAX DEDUCTION.

We thank you in advance for your contribution and cannot wait to see what our new yearbook has in store for us all.

Here is an example of a Recognition Ad that many parents can purchase for their son or daughter.

Armenian Independence Day Festival!

Thursday, May 26th Armenian music filled the air on campus. A sense of unity between young and old had seized the day. The student council members dressed in red, blue, and orange t-shirts worked vigorously to prepare for the Armenian Independence Day festival.

When the lunch bell sounded, students ran down the stairs and through the hallways in order to be the first to get their hands on Baron Mihran's kebab sandwiches or the famous soudjoukh sandwiches made with love by the teachers and student council members. Looking across the yard, PTO volunteers diligently prepared Nutella, zaatar, and cheese lavash wraps. The obstacle course jumper was a big hit, thanks to many of the high school students who crawled in and jumped around with the elementary kids.

At 2 p.m., all the students gathered in the gym to watch and participate in the Armenian Talent Show. Students, presented dance and song segments in order to celebrate the days' festivities.  There was also a contest between the classes, the "Human Outline Competition".  It was a tie between the 1st Graders and a group of 5th and 6th graders.  Their prize was a day of free dress.

Armenian Spelling Bees

This year, the elementary classes all joined in on spelling bee fun, from 2nd grade to 5th grade classes.  The 2nd graders had a mini bee in their classroom, to get them accustomed to it, while the 3rd-5th grade  Armenian Spelling Bees took place in Soghonalian Hall.  The students had a great time as they did their best.

Mothers vs. Kids Basketball Game

In honor of Mother's day, the 1st-2nd grade students played basketball games against their mothers.  The Kaham teams got together as they opposed their mothers in an intense but fun game.  Needless to say the kids all ended up winning, but the true winners of the day were the mothers and kids who got to spend some fun quality time together on the court.

Teachers' Appreciation Week

Once again the student council honored the teachers of Pilibos during Teachers' Appreciation week.  They set up lovely buffets of foods for the teachers to enjoy throughout the week.  The PTO also joined in providing a beautiful breakfast for the teachers, reaffirming how much trust and appreciation they have for the faculty of Pilibos.

This year, the teachers also received a special treat from the administration.  They were all treated to a half hour spa escape during their breaks.  With heated neck wraps, hand treatments, masks, and more, the faculty was able to relax for a short moment and feel appreciated for all their hard work throughout the year.

Counseling Office

USC's summer programs for high school students are an ideal way for students to sample life on a college campus, explore possible fields of study, earn college-level credits, make friends from around the globe, and enjoy the considerable cultural and recreational pleasures of summer.  Taught by USC faculty, this year's two-and four-week courses cover the academic spectrum, including not-to-be-missed classes from their creative schools.  For a complete roster of classes and more information, visit summer.usc.edu or call (213) 740-5679

Volunteer your time this summer!

With summer session course offerings running thin in the community colleges, stay productive and consider volunteering your time this summer! Volunteering can be beneficial for you  and your community in so many ways. It helps you learn valuable skills such as time management, responsibility and accountability, which you will eventually put to use in the job market. You get to meet and work with a diverse group of people which helps in building and strengthening your communication skills. Colleges and universities pay attention to the work you have done outside of your school environment, and they will be very interested to see how you have volunteered your time. To sum it up, contributing your time and energy to an organization of any kind can be very gratifying.

Here are a list of websites/organizations to look into for volunteering opportunities:

- Volunteermatch.org - easy to navigate; enter your zip code and you will get a list of various locations near you looking volunteers.

- laworks.com - nonprofit that creates and helps organize community service projects in LA

- idealist.org

- YMCA

- Red Cross

- Salvation Army- plenty of community programs that target various causes

- Public Libraries

- Hospitals

- Homenetmen

- ANCA  - A.R.S.

- Asbarez Newspaper

- Horizon TV

- St. Garabed Armenian Church

Once you have completed your volunteer work, request a volunteer form from the counseling office and have your supervisor sign off on the hours you have completed. You may also bring in a copy of your time log, which we will copy and file away. Always remember, keep all original documents yourself and file away somewhere safe. We encourage you to check with the counseling office before making a commitment to volunteer. If you have any questions, please stop by the counseling office anytime!

Environmental Club

ec

One of the major goals of the 2010-2011 Pilibos Environmental Club is to raise the student body's awareness of environmental concerns. Along with the Earth Day Festival, which was held on May 12, 2011, the club members collectively decided to organize an Environmental Awareness Week, beginning May 9 and ending May 13. All students from Kindergarten through sixth grade participated in various activities, such as face painting, a poem/coloring contest, a scavenger hunt, and relay races. In addition, the Kindergarten class designed a poster with their handprints that read, "Make a Change."

The Earth Day Festival consisted of games, activities, food, and entertainment. One of the most interesting activities this year was "Planting in Pots." Over a hundred students participated in this hands-on activity where they planted a seedling into a pot. Afterwards, they painted the pot with whatever designs they wanted. Other games included "Guess how many bottles in the bag," "Spin the Wheel with Environmental Questions," and "Earth Ball Basketball." In addition, healthy foods, such as popcorn, lemonade, apples with peanut butter, grapes, and granola bars were sold during the festival. Students enjoyed the activities and food while dancing to earth related songs such as Michael Jackson's "Earth Song".

To end the Environmental Awareness Week successfully, the Environmental Club invited Heal the Bay on Friday, May 13, to make a speech to the student body in order to spread Environmental Awareness. This non-profit environmental organization seeks to protect the Santa Monica Bay area. Furthermore, it supports efforts to restore the coastal waters.

The Environmental Awareness week was a very successful event for the Environmental Club because it helped instill in the student body the quality to care for their environment.

We are proud of all their athletic achievements of this year. We had a great turn out, more than 160 athletes and parents were at this event. The night was filled with fun and surprises. Thanks to our amazing and supportive KAHAM parents, who have supported the program throughout the year. Thank you for all those who were present at the event.      The Athletic Department presented two of our student athletes with the highest honor one can receive in our Sports Program. For an athlete to be worthy of this honor, one must display high character, dedication and outstanding performance on the playing fields, as well as in the classroom. As of next year, our honoree student athletes, Galust Yesayan #14 and Sam Ayrapetyan #32, will have their jerseys on the walls of our Pilibos Gymnasium next to the jerseys of already retired Student Athletes: Alina Gaboyan, Arlette Vartanian, Michael Nalbandian, Arshag Chahinian and Sevan Sherikian. It was an emotional night given that we also had to say goodbye to the Class of 2011 student athletes. We will truly miss them and we wish them the best of luck in the future!

The Athletic Department won't be able to function as smooth as it does without the endless support from the school administration and parents, hard work of the Athletic Committee, commitment of all the coaches and most importantly the dedication of our athletes. Thank you all for a spectacular athletic year; hope to see you all next year!

The 4th Grade Class put on a performance for the elementary classes in commemoration of April 24.  They recited the poem "Anlreli Zakagadoun", written by Barouyr Sevag and dedicated to Gomidas Varthabet.  The poem was also accompanied by a wonderful instrumental and vocal performance.

7th Grade:

The 7th grade classes put on a remarkable play based on the greek tragedy "Prometheus Bound" written by Aeschylus. They acted out the ancient tale of Prometheus, the god of forethought, and the consequences that followed him when he disobeyed Zeus, the god of all gods.  The students really did an excellent job on stage with their costumes and characters as they portrayed this Greek mythological tale.
